I don't think this is the right place to vent republican frustration.

I take umbrage at my concerns being dismissed as "nonsense" or "republican frustration" by people who are not Australian. It is not only republicans who disapproved of Abbott giving that award to Prince Philip, hence that power being removed from him afterwards.

The only reason it is being discussed here today is because today is the day the Queen presented that gong to her husband. Philip receiving the award is a current event, and therefore I consider that it is valid to express my opinion about it.

It is merely an honorific, nothing more.

Whether it is an honorific or not is not relevant.

This is an award for AUSTRALIANS and he is a FOREIGNER - it is that simple.

I know no one - monarchist or republican - who supports this decision. I do know some for whom it was the last straw that saw them change camps.

For those of you who aren't Australians I think you don't understand the depth of feeling on this issue as it seems as if the British are trying to re-establish their position - that is the symbolism of the action even if that wasn't the intent.

The PM is never again going to be able to make decisions like this - that is the best thing that has happened - no more 'one person decisions' and not just this PM. His popularity plummeted after this decision and he hasn't regained it yet.

Queen Elizabeth hands the Duke of Edinburgh his knighthood of Australia insignia

Queen presents Duke of Edinburgh with his controversial Australian knighthood (because if there's one thing Philip needs, it's another gong)

Wow! That order is gorgeous! I don't want to offend anybody, but all this controversy makes 0 sense. Why criticize the Queen? She was just doing her duty- doing what the PM asked of her. And IMO, what is wrong with honoring the husband of the Head of State, who IMO has served Australia?

I think people went totally overboard in their harsh reactions over Prince Philip's Australian knighthood.

Following his decisive win in the General Elections, HM is meeting with David Cameron. As sitting PM, he will not need to be appointed again, but will continue in the role.

I find that portrait really beautiful.... An interesting insight on Her Majesty's relationship with horses IMO.

Thanks Royal Norway... She does look great! I still don't understand in which occasions she wears her spectacles :D total mystery to me...

The Queen has lit the first of 200 beacons to light up the night sky to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day at Windsor Castle tonight. I watched it live on BBC News Channel / Sky News and she looked great as usual.
