Hip operation for a 96 year old...?! My granny has been refused this operation at 90 because she was considered too old. And she was otherwise in a similar good shape as Philip.

Perhaps your granny would like to try the superior British health system :flowers:

To be fair, I don't think the DoE is using the healthcare system that most 'granny's or grandpa's' in the UK would use!
(DOI - I work in a large NHS Orthopaedic Hospital, and it's EXTREMELY unlikely the DoE would have been offered a total hip replacement on the NHS, whether we think that's the best use of limited resources or not)

The Queen is a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, historians have claimed.

The British monarch's family tree allegedly traces back 43 generations to the founder of Islam.

The findings were first published in 1986 by Burke's Peerage, a British authority on royal pedigrees.

But the claim has recently resurfaced after a Moroccan newspaper said it had traced the queen's lineage back to the Prophet.

According to their findings, Elizabeth II's bloodline runs through the Earl of Cambridge in the 14th century, across medieval Muslim Spain, to Fatima, the Prophet's daughter.

One can understand odd suppositions made by/reprinted in DailyMail. However, one has to wonder what prompted the famous "The Economist" to publish the rumours in question.
“QUEEN ELIZABETH must claim her right to rule Muslims.” So ran a recent headline on the Arab Atheist Network, a web forum. It was only partly in jest. According to reports from Casablanca to Karachi, the British monarch is descended from the Prophet Muhammad, making her a cousin of the kings of Morocco and Jordan, not to mention of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader.

There are many, many odd claims running through the Daily Fail. They thrive on the odd and stop when it come to seeing Elton John in a grilled cheese sandwich. :D

Its kind of like people claiming to be descended from Charlemagne. Its actually rarer to be of European descent and *not* be related to Charlemagne. I would imagine that its the same with being of Middle Eastern descent. The more time that has passed, the better chances you can trace an ancestor back to a well known one.

There is nothing really unusual that Queen Elizabeth II has the Prophet Muhammad in her ancestral tree. Most likely many of us also do.

The Queen's alleged descent from the Prophet Muhammad has been discussed in the soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup.

There is no proof that (1) Zaida was the daughter of Al-Mu'tamid ibn Abbad (Muslim sources state she was his daughter-in-law), or (2) she was the mother of the Queen's ancestor Sancha Alfonsez.

Zaida was the mistress of King Alfonso VI of Castile. Sancha Alfonsez was his daughter by his fourth wife Isabel. It has been hypothesized that Zaida and Isabel were the same person but this has not been proven.

The article suggests the specialist is world-renowned in her field but bedside manner is not her strong suit. I'll bet she and Philip get on like a house on fire.

Clearly you are never too old to be without pain; send granny back to her doctors and get the operation done: its life changing as I know only too well:lol::flowers::bang:

For my late twin sister it was the opposite, she was much younger than 90 but afterwards and for years it was an ordeal for her ! God bless her soul !

The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to hospital for planned surgery on his hip which will take place tomorrow, Buckingham Palace has announced

I wonder how he is doing, still in hospital I suppose.

According to BBC, Prince Philip left hospital today :flowers:

Now comes the tough part- rehabilitation, which requires persistence and patience. I remember when I was rehabbing my shoulder after rotator cuff surgery there were sessions when I felt I made great strides and then there were many times when I didn't make any progress at all that I could see & I felt sooooooo frustrated. Thankfully I had a great physical therapist who encouraged me to stick with it during those times otherwise I wouldn't have full use of my shoulder/arm today.

Articles from the BBC and Telegraph:

Duke of Edinburgh leaves hospital - BBC News
The Duke of Edinburgh has been discharged from hospital following a successful hip replacement operation.

Prince Philip, 96, waved as he was driven past the front entrance to King Edward VII's Hospital in London, having left through a different exit.

He was admitted to hospital on 3 April and underwent the planned procedure the following day.

The duke, who will continue his recovery in Windsor, thanked the public for their "good wishes".

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh left King Edward VII's Hospital at midday today, following a hip replacement operation last week.

"His Royal Highness would like to convey his appreciation for the messages of good wishes he has received."

Duke of Edinburgh waves as he leaves hospital 11 days after hip operation - Telegraph
The duke will have already begun his rehabilitation moving with the aid of a stick or crutches, and will face weeks of more aftercare as he learns to walk again on his new hip.

For about a month before the operation the duke had complained about trouble with the joint but medical experts have said a few weeks after a hip replacement patients are usually back to their normal lifestyle, free from pain.

I assume one of the reasons he left from a different entrance/exit to usual is that he was walking with the aid of crutches,a wheelchair or walker and possibly wanted to avoid being photographed as such. Also the usual entrance has steps to contend with.

Glad to hear that Philip is out of the hospital. I hope he has a restful recovery at home.

I was the same after my shoulder reconstruction. The worst thing was that any painkillers I took lasted maybe five minutes before I threw up - whether chemical or natural - nothing stayed down so I was in total agony and had to use icepacks virtually 24/7 but the physio was brilliant and when I had to return to her last year with my knees, again, (had displaced knee caps) the first thing she asked me to do was show the range of motion with the shoulder and she was pleased that I had total movement and no pain.

I suspect Philip will not have to go to the physio though but will have the physio go to him and will have a full set up in the palace/castle/home where he is so that is a benefit anyway.

i can empathize here with what Philip and several other members go through with surgeries. I had both of my knees surgically rearranged because of kneecaps that just wouldn't stay in place and it went from being able to wiggle my toes to learning how to walk again. Best thing to come out of that was I occupied my time learning how to type. Its served me well.

With Philip being at home and comfortable, its also going to be an incentive to get out and get about as soon as he can. He never was one to just sit and watch the world go by but has always been a man doing something. I suspect it won't be too long before we see him carriage driving through Windsor with a smile on his face. Its what he loves to do.

Is it a possibility that the Duke will need to miss his grandson's wedding, or attend only the ceremony, due to his rehabilitation?

I think he’ll definitely need to use a walking frame even if just as a precaution.

It all depends on whether everything goes well and he isn't suffering pain, I guess. Prince Philip could attend just the ceremony I suppose, perhaps on sticks or in a wheelchair, he might be feeling great and join the afternoon reception for a while. It's all in the lap of the gods I suppose.

I had both hips replace two months apart (last year), came home with walker and cane. Leaving hospital, they made sure I was elevated with pillows because you can't sit reclined or with hips parallel with knees. Its a must to sit "elevated", I had a "hip chair" and I'm sure Duke of Edinburgh has one, it makes all the difference.

I am certain that this will be HIS choice. He will be able. Whether or not he chooses to attend based on energy, rehab progress - it will all be his choice. He may even choose to do the public part and not part of the receptions (or vice versa). Which, frankly I also support. At his age and with his lifetime of service, he should make his own choices.

Since he is so fit for a man of his age I would expect he will be in pretty good condition by the wedding (5 weeks from today!).
