Before the trial there will be an explosive new book of Inakis former partner Diego Torres. Its all over the papers. He claims:

-the couple needed psycholigical help
- ESADE university in Barcelona 'put together a program for world class sports people like Inaki so they could do BA, MBA without really studying'
- Cristina and Felipe's relationship was very good, she wanted to play a major public role and Letizia started to intervene at some point.
- Victoria & Felipe are 'wild' and 'out of control'
- Jaime Marichalar is a 'vase' meaning he only looks good but no more. Inaki always wanted to do something for himself, not become a window dresser like Jaime.
- Juan Valentin is fully aware of the situation, asking Inaki if he has to go to prison
- lots of tension and intrigues going on in the royal family, between Cristina, Letizia, Jaime. Inaki described Marivent in the summer of 2003 as 'difficult' (Letizia wasn't even there yet).
- King JC called Jaume Matas, ex president of the balearic islands (who is now in jail for corruption) asking to be 'kind to his son'. Matas and Inaki were involved over the Palma arena case where lots of money kept flowing with no result.

People who want to exploit the situation in this case the trial to make more money without thinking that tangle and children. In 2016 hardly started for Royals in Spain just hope to have all the necessary respect.

We have to keep in mind who writes this: Diego Torres, the main suspect in the whole corruption case. His is slamming wild around himself, like a man in water who can not swim. Someone can write everything. I can also write that I am a Cocker Spaniel...

In the meantime the NOOS scandal is already long ago and Spain has seen the one scandal after the other. Was the prediction only a year ago that the Partido Popular and the Socialist Party would be completely swept away by Podemos and other parties, now it seems that the current Prime Minister will remain the biggest in the coming Elections this month, despite heavy losses (which were calculated anyway because the PP had the biggest election victory ever 4 years ago on a gulf of support and everyone knew this success was hard to repeat).

With other words: what seemed for sure one year ago: the whole corrupt elite replaced by Podemos and Ciudadanos, seems unlikely now. Stronger even: Podemos itself is also entangled in corruption blames....

So of course there will be a spectacle but the sting has already been removed from the bee: there is a new King, the spotless Don Felipe, the Infanta has no role anymore and no longer addressed as the Duchess of Palma de Mallorca, Don Iñaki has been out of publicity for a loooooong time and simply: time goes on. What seemed shocking two years ago will now only cause some frowned eyebrows and then Spain will continue the normal life of the day.

Absolutely hate getting too political, but I do not believe either Cristina or Inaki will "do" time - just not going to happen. She IS the former king's daughter and I the current king's sister after all and he IS her husband. Just going through the motions trying to make the public happy is just not working - a real waste of money and effort. Even if either or both is sentenced, they will just magically disappear😏😞😔😒😏

Yes but my point remains: the sting has been removed from the bee (or the wasp, what you prefer). Of course she remains a King's daughter and King's sister, but with the new King the Infantas all have become almost invisible.

The newsyness from the news has gone. It is a long and long process, chewed and chewed again. Unlike in some US states, the European justice system is hardly spectacular and the court case will become as dry as a desert, going from legal procedure to legal procedure. Even if Infanta Doña Cristina will be convicted to jail, which is unlikely as she is only a spin-off from Diego Torres/Iñaki Urdangarín, the explosive load is no more. The momentum to shock the monarchy on its fundaments has passed.

My Spanish friends are convinced that [even if convicted] the Infanta will not be imprisoned. and are equally convinced that [if convicted] her husband WILL be..

I agree with Duc et Pair.. the principal damage is already done.

The damage that continues being done is the mindset of the Infanta Cristina who doesnt admit to ANY wrongdoing but insists of being the victim in all of this.

And I think there will be new damage in case the Infanta Cristina is NOT convicted, because even in case she IS innocent, nobody in Spain will believe this but will think that it was her royal status that saved her from any conviction.

I think the same. I'll go further and say Cristina will escape conviction but Inaki won't. Just a guess.

I agree -whether she is innocent or not, she's damned.

Felipe can thank his lucky star that Letizia intervened because that probably saved him from being involved in the current mess.

I believe the correct translation would be "my son-in-law" (mi yerno).

Another question to the Spanish speakers here: what does "asilvestrado" mean ?

Being found not guilty in a court of law doesn't necessarily mean one is innocent, It means though that there was not enough evidence to establish guilt beyond doubt. Assuming that Cristina is guilty a priori (as most people on TRF seem tp do) and reversing the burden of proof would not be consistent with the definition of a fair trial by western legal standards.

The Infanta Doña Cristina is accused of some wrongdoing but the Spaniards have had loads and loads of wrongdoings, nepotism, corruption, clientelism by politicians, by entrepreneurs, by banks, by the Church even, by the Administration, by municipalities, even popular football clubs have been nailed, phew... where is the end of the list.

Yes, when the Infanta Doña Cristina leaves the Court without a penalty, or only with a light penalty, there will be sounds of "class justice" but we can also turn it around: Infanta Doña Cristina is the vicitim of "class justice". She is only a small fish in the waters around Diego Torres but precisely because she is an Infanta de España, she is prosecuted while similar cases would receive an administrative sanction (which can be hefty anyway).

When Spain convicts Doña Cristina, even when there are grounds for reasonable doubt, just to make a good impression on the public, it can face a painful follow-up when the legal team of Doña Cristina appeals at the European Court of Justice and then the Lords Justice in Luxembourg will investigate whether the Infanta has had a fair trial and whether she has been the victim of symbol politics by the prosecutor when the legal team can hand over a list with all comparable cases and their verdicts (all administrative sanctions)... So when the Infanta leaves the Court of Justice with a light penalty, we may be sure that then the prosecutor really has had a weak case indeed.

I also agree with your Spanish friends. And yes the damage is done.
And I think that if Letizia intervened, good for her for standing up for herself and Felipe.

You are correct, the acceptance/usage of corruption in every day life in Spain is unbelievable, if you compare for example in Germany our president had to resign because he bent the truth and our minister of defence had to resign because he copied his doctorate. There are corruption allegations against Rajoy and his predessessors but nothing happens, something I could not image with Mrs Merkel at all.

So, I know this may sound strange, but Inaki and Cristina only did what everybody else of the ruling elite was doing. Making use of connections in order to make money has not been seen as a bad thing in Spain for a very long time. Misusing public money has been pretty normal and therefore the tolerance level of the public has been pretty high. Only since the crisis has effect on their daily lives people got angry but little has changed. The two party system does not help, its one corrupt elite that protects each other. So hopefully this system will break up in today's election.

i am afraid you are right. however, something WILL happen, and that is that cristina and inaki will continue to be 'outcasts' of the royal family, of any serious events and organizations, and in the memory of the spanish people and the international press for life...

... which some may argue that is not a bad place to be in, as they will continue to enjoy from the privileges of being a 'royal' without the responsibilities... (even though they have been convicted for long, they still keep travelling the world, they got a cushy job organized through juan carlos' connections with the aga khan, etc).

Spanish media is heating up before the trial in January

La reina Letizia y Jaime Alfonsín, doble némesis de Cristina de Borbón

The environment of the Infanta Cristian complain of "cruelty", architected by Letizia and Jaime Alfonsin, head of the House, one week of the start of the case Nóos.

- since 2014 Cristina is forbidden to celebrate Christmas in Zarzuela. The Urdangarin family was only informed at the airport when flying to Spain that the Royal House had changed its mind.
- Cristina was not allowed to use Marivent when going to court in Mallorca
- Queen Sofia was not allowed to meet Cristina's children at their home in Geneva but only in a hotel, to avoid pictures.

Infanta Cristina has no one to blame but herself for these problems, she is no better then the man or woman on the street. Being born a daughter of the king she should of know better and done better, she should face the responsibilities of her actions like we all have to. Her excuses show MO that she is blaming everything on someone else without looking at herself, a very selfish woman.

I have not heard her 'blaming everything on someone else" but herself, so if you accidentally have heard her doing so, I would be pleased when you give us your source for that?

All we can go by are press reports, specifically the one cited in Duke of Marmalade's post above. I am assuming this is SnowBirds' source for the comments she made in her post. Do you not believe the information in the article or do you know something we all do not, such as you heard the Infanta herself say the info the article is bogus and untrue? And if you did indeed hear HRH say the article is a lie, can you use her exact words, quoting when and where needed?
