Apparently there is to be an Aboriginal welcome for TRH on the grounds of Queen's Park tomorrow (Monday) morning at 9:40. I think I'm going to get up early and head down.

thank you everyone for the pictures. Its too bad I saw nothing on tv.
Looks like Edward and Sophie had a busy weekend.

You are most welcome Humera. I didn't see anything on TV either, but was hoping that you would be able to magically find something, as you always do. It's really a shame that more publicity isn't being given to this visit. Somebody in this thread mentioned that it is a private visit, but when the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario announced the visit, he said it was a working visit. Also the palace website doesn't say anything about it being private. I guess our only hope is to see something from Toronto today (fingers crossed).

Sophie meets her soldiers
'I feel part of this special family'

By Don Fraser
Local News - Monday, June 06, 2005 @ 01:00

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was clearly cheered by the sunny reception she received in Niagara over the weekend — especially at Montebello Park Sunday.

The countess, wife of Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son, Prince Edward, was at the park to inspect the Lincoln and Welland Regiment and be installed as its first colonel-in-chief.

“I’m enormously grateful to have had the chance to spend the past few days with the regiment,” Sophie told the regiment and the hundreds of onlookers who gathered in the park.

The ceremony followed the regiment’s military exercises Saturday by the Welland Canal near the Homer Bridge, which were observed by Sophie.

“Yesterday (Saturday), you displayed your abilities in the field with professionalism and today you have acquitted yourself on parade impressively,” she said.

“You have welcomed me warmly, and for that I am very grateful. It makes the honour of being your colonel-in-chief all the more special.

The countess said it was a “delight” to be able to greet regiment veterans: “It ... is a perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the dedication and service they have given their country.”

She said it was important to thank the regiment for its service and “remember also the many others who never returned home or who are no longer with us.

“I am proud to be with you all, proud to be meeting my regiment for the first time ... proud to be your colonel-in-chief,” she added.

“Although I may not (always) be with you in person, I feel part of this special family.”

About 300 to 400 people attended the event, which was preceded by at least five cadets being carried out of the park after succumbing to the day’s heat and humidity.

Sophie also helped the Ontario Heritage Foundation unveil a plaque to commemorate Colonel Graham Lyall.

Lyall, a member of the 19th Lincoln Regiment in St. Catharines, a predecessor to the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, helped capture 182 enemy soldiers during the First World War and was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Heritage Foundation chairman Lincoln Alexander and St. Catharines Mayor Tim Rigby helped Sophie unveil the plaque at Montebello Park, but it will be installed in the Lake Street Armoury’s memorial garden.

Welland Mayor Damian Goulbourne also attended the commemoration and park ceremonies. The regiment has a detachment in that city.

At the end of the event, the countess received a gift package of Henry of Pelham icewines from Rigby.

During Sophie’s park walk-about around noon, several onlookers said they were struck by her poise and kindness.

“I think she’s dressed appropriately, I thinks she looks relaxed, she’s enjoying herself,” said Dorothy Yates, a semi-retired St. Catharines accountant. “And she’s spent so much time talking to the veterans.

“This visit is terrific,” said Yates. “It’s good for Canadian morale and it starts to feel that we really belong to the British Commonwealth.

“It makes one feel like we’re part of the family.”

Sergeant Ashleigh Pare, 16, of the 68 Lincoln and Welland Regiment Army Cadet Corps, also enjoyed Sunday’s ceremony.

“It was a really cool and good experience,” said Ashleigh, who attends Westpark Secondary School in St. Catharines.

Sophie also displayed some of her trademark humour when approached by St. Catharines royalist Stella Brown, who commented on how handsome her husband Edward was.

“Yes, that’s why I married him,” replied the countess.

In brief comments to The Standard, the countess, who has a background in public relations, said she enjoyed her visit to Niagara very much.

She said she would return to England with “fond memories” of time spent with the regiment.

Royalty walked the red carpet in Belleville, Saturday.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, spent the day in the Quinte area. It was his first visit to the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, known as the Hasty Ps, after accepting the role of its colonel-in-chief in the spring of 2004.

The trip had been planned with only regimental functions in mind, but the regiment’s commanding officer said the prince didn’t mind adding a public event to his itinerary.

“He was very receptive to changing his plans to meet the community,” Lt. Col. Ray McGill said.

The only public stop of his local tour was a noon ceremony at Station Street’s Memorial Park to honour local war veterans.

A fleet of jet-black Lincoln Town Cars pulled off of Station Street onto Cannifton Parkway, looped around the cenotaph and back onto the street at the east end of the park around 10:45 a.m.

As he emerged, he was greeted by Mayor Mary-Anne Sills, who walked the prince down a roped-off aisle to the foot of the cenotaph as the Army, Navy and Air Force pipe and drum band played.

During the ceremony, Prince Edward, the mayor, and Don MacPherson, president of Branch 99 of the Royal Canadian Legion, each laid a wreath at the foot of the cenotaph.

Making special reference to 2005 being declared the Year of the Veteran, he applauded the efforts of Canadian veterans, adding he was “delighted” to be in Belleville.

“In this, the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, we certainly owe a great debt of gratitude to the enormous support that Canada gave us,” he said in his brief remarks. “There have been several other times when Canada has come to the aid of Great Britain … We certainly think of you in all of those campaigns.”

The prince does not normally consent to media interviews.

As the official part of the ceremony ended around noon, Prince Edward spent about 30 minutes mingling with people in a VIP section, including a number of political dignitaries from all levels of government, municipal officials and — most poignantly — local veterans. He was escorted by Sills, MacPherson, and Capt. Sam Pengelly, aide-de-camp of the Hasty Ps.

For close to 20 minutes, the Prince met nearly all of the veterans on hand and appeared in no rush, asking them about their wartime service.

“He was extremely personal and spent a lot of time with the veterans,” said Sills, who escorted the Prince through the crowd. “...getting them to tell where and when they’d served and what unit they were in, and was very interested.

“He’s a very regular-type person who happens to have a very regal title.”

“This is the best thing that has ever happened for Belleville and the veterans,” said an enthusiastic MacPherson. “This is an honour and a privilege to have the prince here. The veterans are very happy and very pleased to see him.

“Not only is this year, 2005, the Year of the Veteran, but every year should be, because they’re the ones who gave us our freedom,” said the Legion president.

Veteran Bob Wigmore of Belleville is one of the most active ex-soldiers in the unit’s regimental association, and was part of the ceremony’s colour party.

He said the prince was “a gentleman, very casual.”

Local veterans, he added, “are impressed by him. I think it will be good for the regiment.”

“Canadians tend to think we don’t need royalty anymore,” Wigmore said. “After seeing him … I think we should keep those ties. We need our history, and that’s part of our history.”

After a private lunch, Prince Edward spent the afternoon in his role as colonel-in-chief of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, leading a rare inspection of the ranks of hundreds of female and male army cadets from Belleville to Haliburton at Memorial Arena. Seven of eight corps were present.

“I am most impressed with the number of cadets who have turned out on parade,” said Prince Edward, thanking them for the chance to inspect them. “Congratulations … I hope your skills will serve you well wherever life takes you from here.”

“The typical image of someone like this — that it’s just another field trip for them — it wasn’t like that at all,” said Warrant Officer Jannette White, 17, of Peterborough. “He seemed like he wanted to get one-on-one with cadets.”

“He thought we did a really great job,” agreed Chief Warrant Officer Jennifer DeMille, 18, of Belleville.

She served as regimental sergeant-major, a role that required her to work as a liaison between the prince and cadets, and accompany him around the arena.

After months of organizing, the regiment’s senior officers were elated not only by the colonel-in-chief’s visit, but for its unifying effect on its cadet corps.

“The regiment is truly honoured,” said McGill, who added the day full of meetings with the prince and military demonstrations had a unifying effect on the regiment and boosted morale.

Prince Edward spent the rest of his afternoon with the regiment’s reserve members at the Batawa property of Hon. Col. Thomas Bata, founder of the Bata shoe company. Reservists were to meet the prince and stage a mock attack demonstration.

The prince’s Canadian tour was to stop in Peterborough Sunday.

Camouflage-clad Sophie meets her regiment
While all eyes are on Prince Harry and his gruelling training at Sandhurst, his aunt, the Countess of Wessex, also donned military gear to meet her Canadian Regiment in Ontario, Canada.

Sophie said she was "enormously grateful" to have spent a few days with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment when she was installed as its first Colonel-in-Chief.

Dressed in a beret and camouflage, Prince Edward's wife, who received the honorary military appointment last October, told soldiers: "You have welcomed me warmly, and for that I am very grateful. It makes the honour of being your Colonel-in-Chief all the more special... I am proud to be with you all, proud to be meeting my regiment for the first time."

The mother-of-one and her husband will be wrapping up their Canadian tour in Toronto this week.

Thanks Humera for the caps - glad you found something on TV! It's been a pretty quiet trip hasn't it? They were speculating on the news last night that we don't hear much about this couple because there is little scandal surrounding them. I guess in today's world, you have to do something naughty to get publicity!;)

Here's a few more photos from yesterday ...

HRH The Earl of Wessex unveils provincial plaque celebrating the Toronto-Dominion Centre

TORONTO, June 7 /CNW/ - His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex today
unveiled an Ontario Heritage Foundation plaque celebrating the
Toronto-Dominion Centre (TD Centre). The TD Centre altered Toronto's cityscape
and influenced the future design of many buildings throughout the country.
"We are pleased to be working with TD Bank Financial Group and The
Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited to recognize this icon of Modern
architecture," said The Honourable Lincoln M. Alexander, Chairman of the
Ontario Heritage Foundation. "It is important that we are now recognizing
modern architecture for its heritage value. The modern movement changed the
appearance and function of cities across Canada in the short span of three
decades. The presence of HRH The Earl of Wessex makes this occasion even more
significant."
Designed by influential architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the TD Centre
is a prominent example in Canada of Modern architecture known as the
International style.
The International style, often used synonymously with Modernist
architecture, was named for its applicability to different cultural and
climatic conditions, implying a universal design approach and aesthetic that
could be valid anywhere in the world. It favoured modern materials and
standard modular parts for ease of fabrication and erection and shunned
surface decoration.
The TD Centre is an important landmark that helped to stimulate the
appetite for Modern architecture in Toronto's post-war construction boom. Its
influence can be seen in skyscrapers across the country.
"It is important for us to recognize the importance of modern buildings
as part of the cultural landscape of the province," said Ontario Minister of
Culture, Madeleine Meilleur. "The TD Centre epitomizes the beauty of Modern
architecture."
"The development of the TD Centre represents a special symbol in the
bank's history and growth," said John Thompson, Chairman of the Board, TD Bank
Financial Group (TDBFG). "Our former chairman and CEO Allen Lambert was deeply
involved in the development of the TD Centre, personally supervising the
construction between 1964 and 1968. Today's recognition by the Ontario
Heritage Foundation is a wonderful complement to TDBFG's 150th anniversary
celebrations throughout 2005."
"Canada's Landmark Urban Destination, the Toronto-Dominion Centre was
considered radical when it was constructed in 1967," said Peter Sharpe,
President and CEO, The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited. "As one of our
flagship assets, we are proud of its architectural legacy and of the business
growth that started when this tower broke the ground for Toronto to enter onto
the world stage. After almost four decades it is still one of Canada's most
sought after business addresses."
This unveiling is part of the Foundation's Provincial Plaque Program that
commemorates significant people, places and events in Ontario's history. The
Foundation has unveiled over 1,180 of these distinctive blue and gold plaques.
The Ontario Heritage Foundation is a not-for-profit agency of the
Government of Ontario, dedicated to identifying, preserving, protecting and
promoting Ontario's heritage.

Edward and Sophie were on MuchMusic today! (for those of you who dont know, thats the Canadian equivalent of MTV)
They met with some of Toronto's youth and watch some musical performances. Sophie especially enjoyed a rap song.
I dont know when the visit will be aired on MuchMusic. I actually saw it on the news on City Tv. I checked the MuchMusic listings today but nothing is listed. Will keep my eyes open.

Well I met TRH today at the Monarchist League reception and it was an amazing experience. Both were so charming and personable. Prince Edward reminded me very much of the Duke of Edinburgh. Sophie was wonderful as well and so easy to converse with. Here are some photos I took of them on their visit to Queen's Park yesterday. Humera, can you please keep me posted if you find out anything more about their visit to MuchMusic airing? I'd love to see it!

Hats

 HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT THE COUNTESS DOES NOT WEAR HATS ON STATE VISITS LIKE DIANA AND FERGIE DID????????????

I'm afriad this wasn't a state visit. It was a private visit which means that the Earl and Countess of Wessex were privately invited by the federal governments to visit. They were invited to be induced into their regiments, hand out DOE awards.
An official visit is an arrangement between the governments of Canada and the UK. The Earl and Countess of Wessex's only official visit was in 1999.
What I thought was worrisome was that it was 36 degrees at the event and Sophie looks pretty warmly dressed.

Prince of the City

The ChumCity building has been home to many different kinds of stars over the years. The kings and queens of movies and the royalty of rock have all passed through the doors at one time or another.

But for the first time ever on Tuesday, Citytv’s Queen St. West digs played host to some real royalty – The Earl Of Wessex.

Prince Edward spent part of his eight day tour of Canada seeing the inner workings of the station that’s gained international fame.

But unlike some of the stuffy events the Prince is normally forced to endure, this time the royal was rocked.

He and his wife Sophie were treated to a hip hop concert by Toronto artist Maestro that literally brought the house down.

They later looked at student displays highlighting charitable efforts at local schools and fielded questions, encouraging youth to achieve all they can.

“Get involved in activities,” the Prince advised his young audience. “Get involved in organizations. Get involved in clubs and societies and you will inevitably make an impact.”

Which is quite the statement from a man who already knows how to make one.

Before ending their tour, the royal couple was presented with a gift: copies of the book “The CHUM Story” and a T-shirt for their little girl, Lady Louise.

At centre stage were 36 youth, showcasing their accomplishments through display boards and presentations. The royal couple were invited to interact with students at their stations, spending time with individual youth in an intimate, informal setting. In a question and answer session, The Earl and Countess responded to questions from students regarding Their Royal Highnesses’ own motivations as philanthropists and their views on the power of youth to change the world. Maestro Fresh Wes closed the ceremonies with a live performance of “Stick to Your Vision” (These Eyes).

The four Toronto-area elementary and high schools participating in the day’s events represent areas as diverse as the inner city, Etobicoke and Scarborough. Monarch Park Collegiate Institute, Prince of Peace Catholic School, Michael Power/Saint Joseph’s High School and Sir John A MacDonald Collegiate Institute have each distinguished themselves through their efforts to support Free the Children programs.
The event will be incorporated into a one-hour Canadian Learning Television program produced for schools across Canada emphasizing social engagement amongst youth.

Humera, can you please keep me posted if you find out anything more about their visit to MuchMusic airing? I'd love to see it!

I've been keeping an eye on Much Music for two days now and unfortunately haven't seen a thing. They usually repeat all their shows but not this one I guess. That only leads me to believe that the visit was aired on tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately I was busy sleeping-in;)

Great pictures btw...it must've been very exciting to meet Edward and Sophie. They seem like the most down-to-earth people.

... and if it is not shown on Much Music again, it looks like it will eventually come to TV in another form. Quoting from the last sentence of Post #61 above:

"The event will be incorporated into a one-hour Canadian Learning Television program produced for schools across Canada emphasizing social engagement amongst youth."

Has anybody seen or heard anything about the events the Earl and Countess were to have carried out on Wednesday in Ontario? Edward had engagements in Waterloo and St. Thomas, while Sophie had 3 engagements in Toronto. I haven't been able to find anything ... it's like they suddenly dropped off the face of the earth:confused:
