If the public refused to buy the photos then there would be no way the photographer would get paid for the photo and therefore no need to take the photo. He gets paid because people will buy the magazines etc and thus it is the general public that are the ones responsible, as they are for all these photos and unsavoury actions of the photographers and paparazzi.

The only thing that I can see that is inappropriate is Beatrice dressing like she did. Her skirt is way too short and just a little gust of wind will make it reveal more than she wanted. Yes, the photographer took advantage, but on the other hand, she has to be more aware. Bea is, after all, a member of the RF and as such should use a bit more discretion, perhaps, when choosing her outfits? Just IMHO.

That's why I always find it funny when people make outraged comments about an article about a celebrity, such as: "we don't want to hear about him/her all the time, why doesn't the press stop feeding us these stories?"

Um...because people like you are taking the time to read and comment on them!

It's the same with controversial programs like Sarah's Wythenshawe documentary. The more controversy, the more publicity. The more people complain, the more it means they're paying attention.

The girl is an adult she is responsible for her expenses, otherwise the father, but why the mother??

As she is still a student her parents are responsible for her expenses. She doesn't have a job so she doesn't have an income and therefore is reliant on her parents for her expenses, just like a lot of young people at university.

It seems to me, from my reading of the story, that it is the Foreign Office who were sent the bill and from there it went to Sarah for some reason.

I suspect that it went to Andrew as the royal father but it makes better headlines if it appears that it is Sarah who has to pay. I do think that a lot of the time it is forgotten that Beatrice and Eugenie have a father as they are so associated with Sarah rather than Andrew.

I found a telling statement at the end of the article:

Buckingham Palace said "Princess Beatrice carries out no formal royal duties at the moment...."


This suggests to me that the intention is that Beatrice will become a working royal when she leaves university and will therefore act in support of her grandmother, uncle and cousin. That makes sense as she is fifth in line and can serve as a Councillor of State etc but it is the first time I have seen any real suggestion that the York girls will work for the Firm rather then become private individuals.

I hope they do as the British Royal Family need some new young royal female blood as they haven't had all that many actual princesses for some time but I also hope that Beatrice does so in an appropriate manner.

Furthermore, all these stories seem to me strange. Either the BRF has not made clear an explanatin with Eugenie and Beatrice, about what is covered by the State and what girls should pay by their pocket, OR the press is just making stories from nothing.

Both York girls are presented as running around the world and producing expenses to contributors by doing nothing in their life!

It looks such a lack of responsibility from the Queen.... towards her people! it seems not to be true

I would imagine they know precisely that only official functions/trips are covered by the taxpayer. Whilst the taxpayers may have to pay for the protection officers, private trips are not. The article states that

However I don't think the suggestion that they might be cutting a few ribbons in the future can justify the cost, unless they become full time royal workers, such as Anne or Charles, they will be still be seen as a waste of money by many Britons.

I think that the intention is that they will be full time working royals - at least Beatrice will be.

I know many people will say that more royals aren't needed but the ones that are doing the work now are those over 50 with the exception of Andrew (49), Edward (45) and Sophie (44). Next is Anne (59) and then on upwards.

Harry seems intent on a full time army career for the foreseeable future so only William amongst the younger generation to pick up the slack.

That is why I see Beatrice being a full time working royal within a couple of years (even before William is fully established I suspect).

I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude toward the York princesses. As long as they're in university, I'll cut them some slack. But once they've graduated, they'd better buckle down and work.

I couldn't agree more.

Beatrice is about to start her second year at uni and Eugenie her first so they have a pass from me for three to four more years (finish uni and one more gap year).

I base that other gap year on the fact that William had a second gap year after leaving St Andrews before entering the army and Harry's gap year turned into almost two between leaving school and joining the army so they are equally entitled to two gap years.

However after that I would be wanting to see 300+ engagements a year or no publicly paid security. However I would also go so far as to say if they aren't working full time as royals they also qualify for a press free intrusion into their lives i.e. no reports at all about love lives, weddings, etc.

The 300+ royal engagements a year for Beatrice isn't realistic particularily when you look at the minor royals workload at the moment. Princess Alexandra (with her HRH) gets 24/7 police protection for herself and her estate and carries out just over 100 engagements a year. Sophie Wessex carries out just over 200, Camilla does just over 200 (it has been increasing each year) The Duke of Kent does 200. Royals also don't jump into 100s of engagements in one year even Anne, who is held as the benchmark of workload didn't start doing more than 300 until she was in her late 30's. After her equestrian career and having children.
Beatrice will start off like William and Harry with 13(William) and 6(Harry) in their first year of official engagements being recorded in 2006. She'll probably also not be a fulltime royal, other royals worked elsewhere, even Princess Alexandra worked as a nurse in a hospital in her early 20s before she took on fulltime duties. DoK spent 20 years in the army, the DoG's brother was heir to the title and worked as a diplomat.

Beatrice hasn't shown any reluctance to perform official engagements or work with charities, it's just up until now it's all work done through her mother and her charities, Buckingham Palace hasn't organised anything for her, but then maybe they're waiting until both she and Eugenie finish their education. Earlier this year Beatrice did accompany her father to the BP reception for the Obamas. Eugenie has also done charity engagements through her mother, last one in June for a Down's syndrome soccer charity.

As far as no press intrusion if they don't perform royal duties, unlikely when you look at Zara Philips, (and Peter in his younger days, he's managing to escape most now as he lives in Hong Kong). Even Princess Margaret's children still get press coverage and they are very low key, especially Sarah and yet there was 'marriage in trouble' speculation recently.

Unless charities approach them, I really don't think 300 is a possibility. In the future few years, we will be looking to William, Harry and their wives to take the place of the ageing relatives, (who carry out very few official engagements even now). We will still have Anne, Andrew and Edward covering some events, allowing for the general feeling that 'celebrity' is far better than royalty, I wonder if there will be any need for the York girls.
