"An animal psychologist is to examine Princess Anne's English bull terrier which savaged one of the Queen's corgis and attacked a maid, it is reported.

Roger Mugford told the Sunday Telegraph he had been asked to treat eight-year-old Florence.

The dog bit the maid's knee at the Queen's home in Sandringham, Norfolk, last Saturday, days after attacking one of the Queen's oldest corgis there.

The corgi Pharos was put down after Florence broke its legs in the attack.

Mr Mugford, from Surrey, told the Telegraph he expected to start work this week and possible techniques could include re-enacting attacks to train the dog not to bite.

He told the paper he did not believe Florence should be put down and he thought he could prevent that possibility.

He said: "There is probably some underlying medical factor. We are not talking about an inherently aggressive or dangerous dog.

"I am sure it is just a dog who is feeling a bit out of sorts about something, perhaps pain or old age, and is feeling a bit cranky on the day."

Minor wound

Mr Mugford, 57, heads the Animal Behaviour Centre in Chertsey, Surrey.

The paper said he successfully treated another of Princess Anne's dogs, Dotty, after she bit two boys in Windsor Great Park in 2002.

Princess Anne was prosecuted under the Dangerous Dogs Act and warned by the judge that if there were any further attacks, Dotty would have to be destroyed.

Dotty was initially wrongly identified as the dog which had attacked the Queen's corgi, but a Buckingham Palace spokesman later confirmed Florence had been responsible.

After Florence bit the maid, a palace spokeswoman said the woman had been treated by a doctor, but the wound was a "minor bite" and she did not need hospital treatment. "

Bomb threats accompany visit of Princess Anne to Dublin, Ireland
09:04 PM EST Feb 17

DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) - Irish army experts blew apart a hoax bomb Tuesday as Princess Anne, the daughter of The Queen, visited Ireland in a possible precursor to a first state visit by the monarch.

The army investigated several sites for possible bombs after Dublin media organizations received a string of telephoned warnings purporting to come from Irish Republican Army dissidents opposed to the princess's visit.

A bomb squad used a remote-controlled robot to blow apart a suspicious package in Smithfield, north Dublin, hours before Anne was scheduled to oversee an awards ceremony in the nearby Jameson whisky tourist centre. Police said the package was a hoax.

Anne has made four visits to Ireland since 1998, when the British and Irish governments and several Northern Ireland parties achieved the Good Friday accord. That landmark pact outlined a comprehensive package of compromises designed to underpin peace and stability in Northern Ireland, a British territory.

Anne met President Mary McAleese, Ireland's largely symbolic head of state, on what was being billed as a private visit. Next she travelled from McAleese's mansion in Dublin's vast Phoenix Park to a nearby army barracks to view training of the army's show-jumping horses.

McAleese in 1997 invited the Queen to visit, but the offer has yet to be accepted, chiefly because of the risk of attack by IRA dissidents, who oppose the IRA's 1997 ceasefire.

In 1979 the IRA killed the Queen's cousin, Lord Mountbatten, by blowing up his yacht in the western Irish port of Mullaghmore and made several other attempts to kill members of the Royal Family.

Princess meets Irish President

The Princess Royal was meeting Irish President Mary McAleese in Dublin today in a move which could pave the way for a future visit by the Queen.

Princess Anne will visit the President`s official residence, Aras an Uachtarain, in Phoenix Park before presenting a sports award during a whirlwind one day visit to the Irish capital.

The tour is viewed by many observers as further progress towards a possible visit by the Queen, who would be the first British Head of State to visit the Irish Republic for more than 90 years.

The prospect of such an historic visit moved closer when the Queen received an invitation from Mrs McAleese during her visit to Buckingham Palace in 2002.

The Prince of Wales visited President McAleese at her official residence two years ago, while the Duke of Edinburgh, also paid a courtesy call to Aras an Uachtarain in 1998.

A source close to the President said today`s visit was another important step in improving the relationship between the two countries.

``The President has indicated that she is very happy to receive the Queen in Ireland, but it is up to the two governments to sort out the details of any visit,`` she said.

``The will is there on both sides for a visit but in terms of timetables, nothing is planned.``

Anne will present the Irish Sailor of the Year award following her meeting with Mrs McAleese.

She will also present a founder member of the Meath Peace Group with an honorary MBE, before departing from Baldonnel Airfield.

Juliatta Clancy was awarded the honour in recognition of her work promoting peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland over the past 10 years.

Meanwhile President McAleese will embark on a two day official visit to London tomorrow.
