Aww, what a sweet picture. Overcrowded animal shelters are a big problem in the United States too. It's horrible how many get euthanized because nobody wants them.

Happy Birthday to all horses especially to the Gatcombe stables.

(Why is 1st August horses' birthday?)

Chatter on HorseandHound has started in regards to the upcoming Gatcombe event.

Thoroughbreds celebrate their birthdays on the same date, January 1 in the Northern hemisphere and August 1 in the Southern.

All thoroughbreds have the same birthday so that their ages can be standardized for comparison because of the historical lack of records of actual birth days.

So, a happy unbirthday to the horses at Gatcombe.

The Gatcombe web site has a blog which is conveying the excitement that is building towards this weekend's event.

The Princess Royal walks a dog as she makes her way to
a dressage arena during the Festival of British Eventing at
Gatcombe Park, Stroud, August 8, 2009

I can't help but this is one of the rare dog breeds I do not
like

I fail to see why anyone would oppose the resolution to upgrade BE's communication practices. The discussion around that might have been the last thing anyone wanted to hear after a busy week.

Keep a tight grip on that dog of yours, Princess Anne!

Quote:
Her dogs have a reputation for less than regal behaviour – and several victims including a Royal housemaid have the scars to prove it.
So when Princess Anne’s bull terrier came within sniffing distance of a playful four-year-old boy yesterday, onlookers were naturally anxious.

After all, it was another of her terriers called Dotty that attacked two boys in Windsor Great Park in 2002.

Another eye witness report from the weekend thanks to HorseandHound.

Horse and Hound Online Forum: Sarnie Gatcombe Advanced

By working through the thread two more photographic reports are linked.

I'm very impressed by Gatcombe's condition.

Everytime I see Horse and Hound I always think of Notting Hill with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts!

Now when an event is held here, does Gatcombe get anything for it? These events are not cheap!

I dont understand the connections you made with Horse and Hound.

From these 2 links (again from Horse and Hound)

Festival of British Eventing - Horse & Hound

Photo-Synergy

it is clear that The Princess has delivered quality to her paying guests.

Whether Gatcombe events make enough money to offset the investments, is another question.

The photo upthread in one of those horseandhound links with the cattle and sheep in the background is my favourite. A photo like that could be used by the British livestock industry to promote its clean green organic product. As such, the livestock industry could help The Princess to off -set some of the expenses incurred in getting such a beautiful image into print. I'm sure it is sponsorship that makes the real money whereas admissions and entry fees are just cash flows.

From my own experience, exhibitors pay for displaying their goods and a surcharge is put on the use of stalls if you have to hire them in. Obviously there are entry fees, car parking fees etc.

Thank you Arncliffe and Sky!
Arn, when Hugh Grant got close to Julia Roberts' American Movie Star character in the movie Nottinghill, he had to pretend to be from the press, so he said he was from HorseandHound. Watch the movie, it's quaint.

Princess Royal cancels on veterans after RAF leaves her grounded - Telegraph

Another sign of the recession bitting for the royals?
"The RAF aircraft we had lined up is no longer available and, unfortunately, with taxpayers' money etc, we are unable to justify chartering a private aircraft on this occasion as this option is extremely expensive," Fran Eason, the Princess's secretary, had emailed the organisers.
