The Princess of Asturias Awards 2015

The call for nominations for the 2015 Princess of Asturias Awards is now open

The Princess of Asturias Foundation has opened the Call for Nominations for the 2015 Princess of Asturias Awards. In the coming weeks, it will distribute the publication containing the Call and the Regulations for the Awards, in what will now be their thirty-fifth edition. The publication is now available on the Foundation’s website (Fundación Princesa de Asturias) in Spanish, English, French, German and Portuguese.

The Regulations establish that the following may present nominations for the different Princess of Asturias Award categories: Laureates from previous editions, those public figures and institutions invited to do so by the Foundation, Spanish embassies, diplomatic representations in Spain, members of the eight Juries, provided they do not submit nominations for the Award in the category corresponding to the jury of which they are a member, and other public figures and institutions of renown.

I am wondering now with the focus shifting on Leonor by using the new name 'Princess of Asturias Awards' and publishing the stamp with her picture on it if Leonor will actually attend this years' awards.

I hope that all goes well. In the latest years the proceedings in Oviedo, the proud capital of the Asturias, were disturbed by loud booing, whistling and fierce anti-monarchist demonstrations. The leftist parties, having the majority in the municipal council, are pressing the new Mayor (from the socialist party) to stop cooperating with the Premios Princesa de Asturias because it would be "collaborating with propaganda for the monarchy".

Zarzuela no tiene prevista la asistencia de Leonor a los premios Princesa de Asturias

Despite being the first Princess of Asturias Awards, the King's House confirmed that it is not expected for Leonor to attend the delivery of these awards.

An official spokesman told monarquiaconfidential that "there is no change from last year" and therefore "there is nothing planned about the presence of the Princess of Asturias".

Awards without Princess
Leonor of Spain will be ten years old on October 31, a week after the conclusion of the next the Princess of Asturias awards, the first to be delivered under that name.

All requests more or less intense that arrived at La Zarzuela for the eldest daughter of the King and Queen to attend part of the events to be held between Thursday and Saturday of next week in Asturias have received the same answer: no, not yet of age.

Good for them . Let the parents decide when the appropriate time is.

I guess that could be attend in some part of the events even at this age. But imagine her parents know better. Just wondering what age they consider best. (18?)

I wasn't surprised to hear that Leonor wouldn't be attending, because I had expected her not to. Ten is a little too young to be attending such an event, though it would be interesting to hear what the appropriate age to be attending them is for Felipe and Letizia. Perhaps thirteen, as that was the age Felipe started (though I guess it depends on his experiences with the awards)?

I don't know how it works or what the programme is, but would it be too much for Leonor to attend just a couple of hours? Or maybe just an event that it may be more appropriate fo her age...

Ok. Let's say the ceremony is too much for a girl her age. She's not even 10 yet, it's comprehensible.
What about the visit to Colombres to deliver the Exemplary Town of Asturias award? IIrc her school is closed on saturdays and that seems like a light outing. They've done touristic visits before and I guess this one wouldn't be that different.

I also understand why they said 'no'. Leonor is young for such occasion. BUT like Yashal said above, the Exemplary Town of Asturias award is more relaxed compared to the big Awards. I think Felipe and Letizia need to start to take their daughter to more events in the future, 10 years old is a nice age to start to go to events that are age apropriate for her like hospitals (like Elisabeth did), naming of ships and alike (like Ingrid Alexandra and Isabella).

Children have very different comfort levels and I hope they do not push the Princess of Asturias too soon. The King just very recently stepped into his new position and let him be the center of attention for some time. The Spanish royals are re-building the reputation of the royal house and to let the King and Queen cement the foundation for the new royal family should work just fine. The young princess will have plenty of time to grow into her official role. I admire the King and Queen for apparently taking the young Princess personality into consideration. Not everyone is an extrovert like young Swedish Princess Estelle. Yet I am sure by the time they are young adults they will both be just as capable. Young people just mature in very different ways.
