Arrow Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities 2007

Journals Science and Nature Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities 2007

The scientific journals Science and Nature have been bestowed the 2007 Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. The decision was announced today by the Jury in Oviedo.

Regarded as the most prestigious scientific journals in the world, over the course of their more than one hundred years of history, they have become the most rigorous and important means of communicating the foremost scientific breakthroughs. These journals, which are associated with the most important universities in the world, are indispensable universal references and the vanguard of scientific information.

This candidature has been proposed by Antonio Fernández-Rañada, president of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics and by journalist Pedro Páramo, both of whom are members of the Jury of the Prince of Asturias Awards.

The journal Science was founded in 1880 in New York, USA, with financial support from American inventor Thomas Edison, and later from Alexander Graham Bell. Having become the official journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences in 1900, its foremost objective is to publish scientific findings and research across a wide range of disciplines. Its pages also contain articles dealing with science policy and other matters related to science and technology. Published weekly, its headquarters are in Washington D.C., USA, with another office in Cambridge, United Kingdom. It has a board of reviewing editors, composed of more than one hundred leading scientists worldwide and of the more than 12,000 top-notch scientific manuscripts submitted, less than 8% are accepted for publication. Its impact factor for 2005, as measured by Thomson Scientific, was 30.927

Nature is one of the oldest and most recognized journals of the scientific community. Its first issue was published in November 1869 in the United Kingdom and since then, it has kept to its founding objectives: "to place before the general public the grand results of scientific work and scientific discovery", as the flagship title of Nature Publishing Group, which was created in 1999. Published weekly, it does not specialise in any one specific scientific field, although its publishers have launched other more specialised journals under the Nature brand, including Nature Neuroscience, Nature Methods and Nature Structural and Molecular Biology. In 1970 it opened its first office abroad in Washington DC and then went on to open new branches in New York, Boston, San Francisco, Oxford, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, Munich, Melbourne, Delhi, Madrid and Basingstoke, England. Its impact factor for 2005, as measured by Thomson Scientific, was 29.073.

STATEMENTS BY THE EDITORS-IN-CHIEF OF THE JOURNALS SCIENCE AND NATURE UPON NOTIFICATION OF RECEIVING THE 2007 PRINCE OF ASTURIAS AWARD FOR COMMUNICATION AND HUMANITIES

Science:
"Authoritative, objective scientific communications across borders is essential as science and technology are becoming increasingly integral to global prosperity, yet also increasingly politicized in certain regions. We are delighted and deeply honored that our journal's contributions to public discourse on science and technology have been recognized by Spain's Crown Prince Foundation".

Dr. Donald Kennedy
Editor-in-Chief, Science
Washington D.C., 4th July 2007

Nature:
"This is wonderful honour that took us completely by surprise. It no doubt recognises the dual role of Nature in communicating outstanding science and key societal issues to diverse audiences. But above all, it´s a reflection of the value and impact of scientific research itself within today´s culture."

Dr Philip Campbell
Editor-in-Chief, Nature
London, 4th July 2007

SIX OF THE EIGHT PRINCE OF ASTURIAS FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL AWARDS BESTOWED FOR THE TWENTY-SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR

The 2007 Prince of Asturias Award Juries´ meetings were held in Oviedo during June and July, except for the Sports and Concord meetings, which will be held in September.

The Jury for International Cooperation inaugurated the twenty-seventh year of the Prince of Asturias Awards, bestowing the accolade on the President of the Alliance for Climate Protection Al Gore, "his decisive contribution towards making progress in solving the serious problems caused by climate change that are threatening our planet and which make international cooperation an absolute necessity in the search for a solution [...]".

The Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts was bestowed on Bob Dylan, "a living legend in the history of popular music and a guiding light for a generation that dreamt to change the world. Dylan, with an austere manner and profound messages, combines music and poetry in an oeuvre that has gathered a large following and which determines de sentimental education of many millions of people."

The Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research went to biologists Peter Lawrence and Ginés Morata. The Jury has acknowledged that "both scientists´ efforts to establish morphogenetic processes, based on simple experimental models, make it possible to study topics of considerable complexity. Included amongst these is the role played by some highly conserved genes, identified in species ranging from insects to animals, and the formation of cell lineages which lead to the differentiation of organs such as eyes and wings [...]".

The Prince of Asturias Award for Letters was given to Israeli writer Amos Oz, "a narrator, essayist and journalist that has contributed towards fashioning the Hebrew language into a brilliant instrument for literary art and for the truthful disclosure of the most dire and universal realities of our time, focussing especially on advocating peace amongst peoples and condemning all forms of fanaticism".

The Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities went to British journal Nature and American journal Science. "Both weekly publications represent the most reliable channel of communication that the international scientific community has today for reporting, after a meticulous and impeccable selection process, the most significant research and discoveries in very diverse scientific fields, and at the same time, disseminate the most important theories and facts, whilst combining rigour and clarity", as the minutes of the Jury declared.

Finally, the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences was for the sociologist Ralf Dahrendorf "[...] In addition to his great contributions to the Social Sciences, the Jury wishes to honour his concern for a Europe based on open and cosmopolitan societies, where rights and liberties take root and are defended within a new international order, which will ensure that vital opportunities are spread universally, within a democracy where justice and the law are firmly established".

The Prince of Asturias Awards date back to 1981. Each Award carries with it a cash prize of 50,000 euros, a Joan Miró sculpture created and donated for the Awards, a diploma and an insignia.

Iranian-French photojournalist Reza Deghati is to open a conference series given by National Geographic explorers next Wednesday, 1st August, at 8.00 pm at the Cajastur Cultural Centre-Colegiata San Juan Bautista in Gijon's Revillagigedo Palace. This event, organised by the Prince of Asturias Foundation and Cajastur Savings Bank, will be open to the public up to the seating capacity.

Reza Deghati is the author of the photographs in "One World, One Tribe", one of the exhibits that make up the largest exhibition series carried out to date in Europe by National Geographic and which is on display in Gijon. During his conference, the photographer will speak about his experiences travelling the world as a photojournalist and about his foundation, Aïna, which he himself chairs and whose objective is to support the democratization and creation of a civil society in Afghanistan, after over twenty years of war. Its foremost mission is to support and train Afghans that contribute to the country's cultural life and mass media with their work.

To spotlight interest on the exhibition that is on display in Gijon and to support and bring public notice to Reza's work, National Geographic Channel has scheduled for August the documentaries "Explorers: Reza" and "In the Forbidden Zone", in which the photographer himself stars. The former is a profile on his work and the latter is about Reza's and journalist Sebastian Junger's trip to Afghanistan during the Taliban regime.
