Felipe's speech:
http://www.casareal.es/casareal/funppe01di.html

The Prince began his speech paying tribute to His Holiness Pope John Paul II, saying that his "personality and works have marked, without any doubt, history, thought and conscience of millions of human beings, during more than a quarter of century of his fruitful pontificate", and remembered the condolencies of His Majesty the King, evoking his five pastoral visits to Spain and the gratefulness of the Spaniards towards him.
Don Felipe also praised the work of all the people who make possible that the Prizes have been reaching "an international prestige and a recognition difficult to imagine twenty-five years ago", as well as the merits of all the awarded individualities, responding "to our deep vocation of commitment with the highest values of the human being".

Articles from La Nueva España:

http://www.lne.es/secciones/noticia....umEjemplar=877

http://www.lne.es/secciones/noticia....umEjemplar=877

A blond blue eyed boy called Felipe, son of the King and Queen of Spain, pronounced in Oviedo, in 1981, his first speech, under the attentive glances of his parents. He then presided over the first prize giving ceremony of the prizes that bear his name, the same one to whom the poet José Hierro, months after the coup d'etat of Tejero, remembered the importance of democracy and freedom.

Twenty-five years later, the Prince of Asturias, accompanied by his wife, the Ovetense Letizia Ortiz, remembered yesterday the lessons learned through this time and on this land: "Every autumn, we sent the world a message of passion for freedom with our prizes", he said.

The Foundation Prince of Asturias changed of scene, from the Campoamor to the Auditorium: a sober decoration, in tones of blue, much public, more politicians than scientists, more artists than in other occasions, well-known Madrilenian and mainly Asturian faces.

The opening of the XXV Anniversary of the Foundation had a protagonist, the British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, one of great myths of our time, prize "Prince of Asturias" of the Concord in 1989. His conference, entitled "The nature of reality", was the center of all attentions.

On the scene, there was no table, only chairs and a projection screen. Next to the Princes, there were the institutional representatives. Two videos were projected: "Unforgettable moments" and "Words for ever". Both gathered moments and fragments of speeches pronounced by some of the awarded personalities. Specially touching were the images of Sefardí Solomon Gaon, crying of emotion for his return to Spain, or those of the actress Elizabeth Taylor, saying "I’m arriving with the heart full of hope", as well as the singular voice of Cela, "In Spain, the one who resists, wins", or the voice of Isaac Rabin, talking about Peace (then it seemed possible) between Palestinians and Israeli.

Don Felipe initiated his speech with a "moved and respectful tribute" to the deceased Pope John Paul II, "whose personality and work have marked, without any doubt, the history, the thought and the conscience of millions of human beings". There was no applause, in spite of the pauses made by Don Felipe.

The words of the Prince thanked all those who made possible to arrive at this point. He sent a special memory for the first president, Pedro Masaveu, as well as for the Nobel Severo Ochoa, jury of the prize Prince of Asturias for Scientific and Technical Research.

He remembered the "so beloved” illusion that the prizes "are, from Asturias and before the world, a great work of the united Spaniards". He was specially thankful to Hawking, for having accepted the invitation of the Foundation. "Today he represents all the 242 people or groups, who have carried out these 25 years".

On this occasion, Don Felipe chose Neruda, Octavio Paz and Juan Ramon Jiménez for his literary appointments. From the first one, he chose the "beautiful and full days of hope that have not arrived yet"; from Paz, he remembered his words pronounced at the Campoamor, when he said that the prizes "draw a map of moral and intellectual luck to our world"; from Juan Ramon Jiménez, he remembered the way "with roots and wings". In the end, he paid tribute to Asturias, "sweet and simultaneously brave land" that has helped to discover another great lesson of the prizes: "that the most beautiful and promising adventure of the Spaniards (if we want to reach the highest goals, as so many other times we have done it) is advancing towards the future united in our rich and wonderful plurality of feelings".

THE SPEECH OF H.R.H. THE PRINCE OF ASTURIAS FOR THE INAUGURAL EVENT OF THE PRINCE OF ASTURIAS AWARDS´ XXV ANNIVERSARY

April-12-2005
Oviedo, 12th April 2005.

Today is one of those days that will linger in our minds forever, for this event opens the gates to the XXV anniversary of our Awards. However, before I continue, please allow both myself and the Princess to pay a heartfelt, respectful tribute to the distinguished figure of His Holiness Pope John Paul II, whose character and work have unquestionably left their mark on history and on the thoughts and consciences of millions of human beings in the quarter of a century of his prolific papacy. All of us are greatly indebted to him for being a stalwart in the struggle for mankind´s freedom and dignity. As H.M. the King said in his message of condolence, as Spaniards we are indebted to him for the special affection he showed towards Spain in his unforgettable pastoral visits to our country. I myself had the great honour of accompanying him here in Asturias to Covadonga, on a visit that was a landmark for Asturians in the history of our Patron Saint´s sanctuary.

The event that brings us together here today undoubtedly abounds in recollections and lessons to be learnt, not the least of which is the strengthening of our conviction that an idea to serve good is spawned and fostered when we defend that idea nobly and as one, regardless of the obstacles in the way and the sacrifices needed to turn it into a reality.

This, in fact, is how the history of our Foundation has been forged during this quarter of a century: with modesty and determination, with an enthusiasm that is so close to my heart, that is ever greater by the year, and that strives to turn the Awards that bear my name into a great work founded in our beloved Asturias for all Spaniards as one.

I am pleased to be able to say that we have reached this point feeling both the joy of having forged the path we set out upon, and the confidence, to quote Neruda, that other days brimming with beauty and hope have yet to come.

We would also like these few hours to be a time of grateful recollection, for our feelings and our hearts go out to all those who have accompanied us, all those who have helped us, all those who have been inspired by us, in the course of these twenty-five fruitful years of progress, simply because they too believed in our adventure.

It is impossible to name them all, but allow me make special mention of the first President of our Foundation, Pedro Masaveu, whose unflagging, generous commitment is still a benchmark and a ceaseless stimulus to us. Alongside a small group of estimable idealists, he launched what is today our pride and joy, and steadfastly continues to move onwards. We are also spurred on by the memory of Severo Ochoa, President of the Jury for Scientific and Technical Research for so many years, who Spain paid tribute to this year, the centenary of his birth. We join such a deserved and instructive tribute with deep-felt gratitude.

We would also extol the heartfelt memory of the Laureates who are no longer with us. Memories of them yet remain, swelling the ranks of distinguished men and women whose work and careers have been acknowledged by our Awards.

I likewise want to highlight the generosity of the institutions and organisations who have demonstrated on many occasions their profound desire to make this XXV anniversary celebration a driving force for a brighter future for our Awards, which we so fervently believe in.

I would like to reiterate my gratitude towards the Governments of Spain and Asturias, Oviedo City Council, the Cajastur Savings Bank, the local, national and international media and members of our Boards of Trustees and Guardians for all their support and all their generosity, which are so essential if we are to reach the goals that we set ourselves. Equally irreplaceable is the work of the juries, who have bestowed their impartiality and independence on the Foundation in a way that is exemplary.

Our Awards have also received the backing of UNESCO. The United Nations´ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has made a declaration acknowledging, "the outstanding contribution of the Prince of Asturias Awards to Mankind´s cultural heritage", and has agreed to lend its support to the XXV anniversary celebration events that we inaugurate today in a gesture which we are also deeply grateful for.

However, this event would not be complete and would not take on its full significance if it were not for the key figures of this organisation, our Laureates. For this reason, we would particularly thank the much-admired Stephen Hawking for having enthusiastically accepted our invitation to return to Asturias and give the conference that launches our celebrations. Today, he represents the 242 people or groups who have played the leading role over these 25 years. We will never forget having Stephen Hawking amongst us in 1989, when we handed him the Award for Concord and when he delivered some wise and moving words to us.

And so, this is a day that looks forward in hope towards the future, for hope is the cornerstone of our Awards, which express our conviction that in such a rapidly changing world, it is still worthwhile investing all our efforts and all our willpower in this noble task, so that nobody feels alone when they devote their talent, intelligence and vocation to the benefit of Mankind.

I believe, therefore, that the Foundation and the Awards, which have acquired a prestige and international recognition that was unthinkable twenty-five years ago, clearly embody our deep-rooted vocation and commitment towards mankind´s highest values.

Octavio Paz expressively defined our Awards some years ago when he said that they formed a sort of moral and intellectual map of the world. This is the moral and intellectual map that we have gradually traced out each year, and which we fervently hope to continue in the coming years.

We will make our way with roots and wings, as Juan Ramón Jiménez so beautifully summarised: roots so as to live anchored in this land, which gives meaning to our organisation and is its starting point, and wings to pursue a constant quest to go a little further, meeting the greatest of challenges, crossing frontiers, and overcoming obstacles with tenacity and courage.

For me, this is a very emotional day; as always happens when the greatest gestures are repeated, the tradition of returning each year to Asturias -now alongside the Princess of Asturias- to preside the presentation ceremony of the Awards bearing my name, has led to me to treasure the many moments etched unforgettably on my memory and the words that ring in my head and will linger there forever.

And precisely because of this, I am now able to fully appreciate the words in all their beauty that José Hierro dedicated to Asturias that unforgettable day in 1981 when he collected his Award for Letters on the occasion of the first presentation ceremony. He said at the time that the valleys and mountains of this land are, "like gardens, green mosaics where everything is miniscule, where everything can be caressed by the eye".

We have set out from this pleasant yet rugged land, and travelled together over these twenty-five years in search of the chosen ones. Here, in Asturias, we have learnt yearly to understand ever more fully what the words solidarity, justice, courage, effort, and generosity mean, whilst learning a great lesson through our Awards: if we are to reach the highest goals -as we have done so many times in our history- the finest, most potentially fulfilling adventure of the Spanish people is to move towards the future united in our marvellous wealth and scope of feelings.

I am indebted to this land for that lesson, as many others also are. This is a heavy debt for me, for every Autumn, when our Awards send our message of longing for peace worldwide, strengthens my commitment towards Spain.
Such a message also encompasses a need and a fervent desire for life and hope to triumph over suffering and injustice.

Thank you.
