I think Letizia looks underdressed with that cardigan. O.k. the sportswoman´s fashion was too much but Letizia looked much more elegant in earlier years. The whole presentation IMO made the impression of being more "low key" than in earlier years.
Why did Letizia´s mother attend? IMO she had no business to be there.

And why could she not be invited as her daughter is the Princess of Asturias? It is her daughter and son-in-law that are the main people at this event in addition to the award recipients of course.

I agree, Letizia did not look as elegant as I was expecting for the occasion. I mean obviously I wasn't expecting gala wear, but her outfits in previous years were a little more dressy.
With regard to her mother's attendance, if I recall correctly Paloma and Menchu (Letizia's grandmother) have attended every (or most) PoA Awards since Letizia and Felipe married. They receive no special honor with regard to the Awards other than the invitation to attend. I may be wrong here but that is my understanding.

The look of a matching shrug/candi over a dress is very fashionable this season. Many fashion catalogs have this look, it's not considered a casual look.
Letizia's family was from Asturias, I'm sure Dad or Mom would like to attend the biggest event of the year in Asturias, expecially now their daughter and son-in-law (mainly) were 'perfoming'. Her grandma Menchu had attended the PoA awards even before letizia started dating Felipe.

The ceremony is one of the events I´m waiting for every year and nowadays it´s fantastic that I as a Finn can watch the ceremony live in the internet. It was also nice to see Felipe and Letizia before and after the ceremony, the closeness between them, always holding hands.
Miss Isinbayeva was totally overdressed and her dress wasn´t suitable to this distingueshed event. I can understand that she was happy about the Award but I think that she likes too much to flirt to the camera and draw all the attention to her. She wasn´t the only one that got the Award.
I think that Letizia looked sensational with this beaded dress, her hair and make up were perfect and the cardigan gave some simpliness to the dress. Queen Sofia looked perfect and lovely too, and it was a nice surprise to see princess Alia there too.
This is every year one of my favourite photos from the ceremony, it´s so precious to see Felipe and Letizia looking up to the Queen when they arrive to the stage.

I certainly don't want to derail the conversation from the original topic, but I think that's a little bit harsh. If I remember, her family is from that region, so perhaps its only natural that someone from the family would attend. It would be the same as your parents attending an event you coordinated because they were proud of you and the event. A way of showing support so to speak.
From what I have seen, her mother did not draw attention to herself, ask for special consideration or anything like that, but acted like a normal person would attending the event.

The visit to Sobrescobio looked really nice, looked like a nice place and the couple were really happy. Crown prince couple greeting the young children sitting on the wall.
The also looked like having a good time using the shovles.
This is one of the best pictures
