Margaret Atwood, Prince Of Asturias Award Laureate For Letters
The Canadian writer Margaret Atwood has been bestowed with the 2008 Prince of Asturias Award for Letters. The decision was announced by the Jury in Oviedo today.
The leading figure in Canadian literature and one of the most outstanding voices of contemporary fiction, Margaret Atwood offers in her novels a politically committed, critical view of the world and contemporary society, while revealing extraordinary sensitivity in her copious poetical oeuvre, a genre which she cultivates with great skill.

as much as i like ingrid and felt bad during her kidnapping, i doubt she is a good candidate for a price such as the nobel peace prize or the prince of asturias. being kidnapped is not something she chose and is definitely not something that has a direct impact in the end of the FARC. now, if she decided to engage in activities to promote dialogue or to free the other people in the jungle and showed change by her activities in the next couple of years, that would be worth of a prize, in my opinion. i'm disappointed that the other candidates to the prize, who worked hard to achieve peace and wellbeing of people during years, are seeing their candidatures being left out. it's obvious the prince of asturias foundation wants to attract press and hype to the prizes and ingrid seemed to be the perfect way of doing so.

I agree with you. The time span from the moment of her release to this point of giving her the prize is just too short to fully establish if the peace and social change that they were campaigning had really been achieved. It was a triumph that she was freed, yes, but that doesn't equate to bringing peace. FARC is still in Colombia, after all.
The same also goes for Rafa Nadal. While I felt like crying when he finally broke through and won Wimbledon, he is not yet even into the prime of his career. It's a bit premature to give him the award, I think. He still has many years ahead, and I'd better appreciate it if he was given the award when he has retired after solid years of playing top tennis.

The Simon Bolivar Orchestra is very impressive! I think that it was a very wise choice to award them the arts award.
