Perhaps this is a very ignorant question, but why does Spain have any ceremonial influence in Columbia? I realize they are both Spanish-speaking countries and Columbia probably exists because of Spanish exploration and colonization, but why the connection still? Is it a relationship like that of the English RF and Canada?

No, Spain and Colombia are different countries, Spain doesn't have any ceremonial influence in Colombia. This was the inaguration of a new head of State, so different countries sent representatives. For example, the president of Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador...were there. 80 countries sent a representation, and the Prince has been Spain's representation in Latin America since he finished his studies in Georgetown in 1995. In 2008 Letizia and him made an official visit to Mexico, and it was treated as a State Visit(reserved to Heads of State, in Spain the King).

Thank you Spain for sending such a distinguished representative to our new president´s investiture!

The brazilian press highlighted the fact that Spain sent Prince Felipe to the investidure of Dilma Roussef as president, among others leaders, like Hillary Clinton and presidents and prime ministers from different countries. And when I was watching the event on tv, people around me commented how tall Felipe is and that Dilma must be frustated of not getting a kiss from Felipe on her cheek lol

I wonder if the Prince thought Marcela Temer the wife of the vice president was pretty...I heard that she is now being called the "other Carla Bruni." Too funny.
