I think you are suppose to wear white gloves when dealing with historical documents

It actually depends on the Institution and their rules. Both History Detectives and back in the day FYI Roadshow covered that issue because sometimes the experts would wear gloves and other times not and the viewers were obviously confused. They follow the rules of the place they're at. If they say wear gloves to handle stuff, the gloves go on. If they give the go ahead to handle things w/out them, they do.

I'm sure Letitizia asked if she could touch the book w/out gloves. She's been to many events like this over the years and I'm sure she knows the protocols. If it wasn't fine, she wouldn't have done it. :)

This is the first I've heard of their visit, no coverage except a brief mention by the Washington post. I imagine the press in Florida will give them a lot.
Anyone else in U.S. Seen any press on them?

Not here in the southeast. This is the first I heard they were visiting as well. No mention on the websites for the local tv news or the newspapers.

Cohosted by the Wilson Center and the Elcano Royal Institute

Confronting common threats and security challenges, the United States and Europe are more and more at pains to find common solutions. Speaking at the Wilson Center, His Majesty the King of Spain will frame an expert conversation between the Wilson Center and Elcano Royal Institute on security challenges and transatlantic relations. Before his keynote remarks, our panelists will explore U.S.-Spanish counterterrorism, joint efforts to stabilize the Sahel, and the shared struggle to counter extremism around the world.

King Felipe VI of Spain Discusses U.S.-Spanish Counterterrorism Efforts at the Woodrow Wilson Center In D.C. - Pictures - Zimbio

Maybe the difference is only so striking because The POTUS is such a great and exceptional speaker, seeing Obama talking calmly and summarizing the meeting without any effort and immediately after seeing Felipe reading from his card, almost stumbling through his words and trying to play down his nervousnes with some empty gestures, its like professor and first day pupil.

Obama expresses deep commitment to “strong, unified Spain”

The US president did not specifically mention Catalonia in his address, and later avoided EL PAIS’ questions on whether he and the Spanish monarch had discussed the issue during their nearly hour-long meeting.
But his mention of a “strong and unified Spain” satisfies the Spanish government’s desire for more explicit support from its allies with regard to the possibility of secession by the northeastern region. Earlier this month, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UK Prime Minister David Cameron publicly expressed similar support.

I wonder if there was any reaction in Spain to Obama"s indirect statement against Catalan independence.

There are very close ties between Spain and the US. The spanish King and the President probably had more serious business to discuss than was the case when the Dutch King and Queen visited. Looking at the photos the meeting between the Dutch royal couple and the Presidential couple it appeared more of a social event than a business meeting.

Neither Queen would be attending a serious meeting between two heads of state. The governmental ministers travelling with the royals at these state visits would be the ones accompanying the King.

Although the Spanish Royal House keeps a low profile, the Spanish monarchy. among Europe's surviving monarchies, remains second only to the British monarchy in terms of historical significance and iformer imperial past and reach. The Dutch monarchy is probably a distant third.

Moreover, from Obsma's point of view, based on population and GDP size and the presence in the US of millions of Spanish-speaking residents, Spain happens to be geopolitically more significant than the Netherlands, even though the Netherlands is of course much richer than Spain in terms of per capita GDP.

Rajoy and Co. are super thankful, you can bet. Basically that statement was the main news about the visit everywhere in the media here.

Let's hope the Government will have the finesse to send some bottle of good old Rioja to Obama in appreciation :D

I think there is something to be said for staying true to one's style. Letizia is-and has always been-modern, independent, and very beautiful.

In other words she is not a particularly regal queen because "regal" isn't her style. Maxima does regal very well and very naturally. It suits her, imo. And she has the height, presence and personality to carry it off.

At least Letizia doesn't try hard to be someone she is not, unlike a couple of other Royal spouses that come immediately to mind.

ETA: I do wish Letizia had kept her bare hands off rare historical artifacts. Everyone knows that natural body oils can be damaging to fragile paper in books. I would have expected her to know better. Any other tourist would have been invited to leave Mount Vernon asap for doing that.

Can we move on from comparing Queen Letizia to other royals as it has become so tedious and repetitive, several of these posts and replies have been deleted as will any further ones.

Thanking you all!

Kind Felipe did beautifully with our president in the White House meeting from my viewing of the video posted. I would even say he spoke better than the president, without hesitation. He is also perfectly bilingual, which our president is not, though I could tell Obama could understand some of the Spanish translation.
If all Spanish speakers spoke as clearly and slowly as the translator, I would be able to also!
Another day in the USA of no coverage of this visit. I predict they will get huge local coverage in Florida which may spill over to national news as Hispanic news. They are getting Spanish cable TV coverage

Besides being a part of this forum, i have not heard anything about this trip in my neck of the woods, of course yesterday we did get the rare occurrence of rain so that took up all the headlines :p

As everyone knows Southern California has an enormous Spanish speaking population but except for Telemundo, the visit of the Spanish Royals is being virtually ignored here:sad:.

I believe King Felipe VI lived in the US before while he was studying for his master's degree at Georgetown University. Of course, he was already fluent in English by then and probably had learned English as a child. His Majesty also speaks French and Catalan, in addition to Spanish and English.

^^^From what I've read Sofia spoke to her children in English to help them with their fluency.

I haven't been on this forum for a few days or I would have known the King and Queen of Spain were in the U.S. I had no idea they have been here for several days. Not that I'm surprised. The media in the States care little to nothing about any royals who aren't British. So, I'm glad I discovered this forum to get info that no other media wants to report.

My Yahoo news feed had something about it yesterday. But that disappeared later in the day. Few of my friends can name 4/10 top of the line of succession or the UK. And I doubt any of them even know what other monarchies exist in Europe (much less elsewhere). Tiaras and dresses may be on the radar in my neck of the woods, but monarchies are not. ;)

I attended some of the events at the 450th Anniversary and birthday of St. Augustine as I live within driving distance of the city. I look forward to hearing about the King and Queen's trip to St. Augustine. It's too bad that they weren't able to attend the events of the 450th birthday itself.

I noticed in the video the Queen asked permission to touch the book . . . she was told she could . . . as long as she did nor tear off the pages ;)

I don't doubt she would have been thoughtful about touching something valuable and historic.

I wonder if they had time to see Felipe's old dorm room and other hang out sites when he was a student there.
