The president asks the Princess "What happened?" and she replys "I don't know, they brought by here" (as arriving from the Prince's side from nowhere). Then there are very strong commentaries about the mistakes of the Protocol and also because of Letizia was host by the President's daughter insted of his wife, the First Lady. He evens jokes that the First Lady could be the aunt or niece, if it's going to be this way.

It did look embarrassing, really. Most latin-american countries put on a big show when Spanish royals come visit, they do the red carpet thing etc even for F&L, make it almost look a State Visit as the Spanish (monetary) support is vital to them. But then, they should get it right. Thats a massive protokoll mistake and looks very wrong even on video, but still funny when Letizia is pointing one way, the aide is poining in the opposite direction, Letizia again pointing the other way, the aide again pointing in the opposite direction.
Regarding the First Lady not being around for whatever reason, I dont think its an affront to have the daughter around instead, other Heads of State who are not married or separated bring along other people (eg Evo Morales of Bolivia representing with his sister).

I think the President 'fixed' it rather graciously. Mistakes do happen sometimes, no need to over react, hopefully no one would get fired.

Prince Felipe seemed to be finding the whole thing to be very funny. Maybe the staffer thought Leticia was too good-looking to be the wife and thought she was a girlfriend and didn't want her to be walking the red carpet. People make mistakes.

Lovely photographs. I admit that one of the things I love about Letizia is how comfortable and how much she enjoys being with people. She always glows with an an ear to a ear smile when she is mixing with normal folk, specially children. In many ways she's a breath of fresh air.
