King Felipe VI and Government formations

hahaha, the ponytail makes a statement again by dressing badly when visiting the king!

i know - he is so wrong on every level!

i am not sure what felipe and his guests at palace are smiling about - the govenrnment is in shambles. i'd be worried rather than smiling at this point.

Worst thing is that I think new elections will do nothing to unblock this situation. Yes, some seats may change, but that will solve little and I think the result will be esentially the same than 6 months before. Pacting will be neccessary again, and they seem unable to agree on anything. And we will have lost 6 months and the money of a new campaign on nothing. Makes me ill, really

It's such a shame that they pull away all the responsibility on citizens making us vote again even though we know they have done absolutely nothing to reach an agreement. We already did our part, deal with it and do your **** job :bang:

The political situation reduces the international agenda of the Kings to a historical minimum. The 4 cancelled state visits (Saudi Arabia, UK, Japan, South Korea) cannot be rescheduled before October and are likely not to happen before 2017, that is only if the next elections will not end in another deadlock.

Similar result in spanish election.

Rajoy (PP) got stronger but still no majority. Socialists have ruled out a coalition with PP. 3rd strongest force is Podemos, Iglesias is not happy with the result.

The result points to difficult negotiations as some of the smaller parties and Podemos favour the independence of Catalonia, a no-go for PP or the socialists. The rest has no majority. A third elections in 6 months time seems not impossible.

Rajoy will again be the first person to address regarding the formation of a government.

Already on the first day Mr Rajoy was shown the middle finger by the other parties. The problem remains: his Partido Popular (PP) is by far the biggest in the Chamber -but short of a majority on it's own- and holds an absolute majority in the Senate.

Even when two or three smaller parties form a Government, it will be difficult with a big PP-bloc as opposition in the Chamber and with the PP-majority in the Senate.

In the ordinary lawmaking process, both the Chamber as well the Senate may be the initiator. The Senate (the PP-majority) can amend hostilely or veto, the proposal then being sent back to the Chamber, which can override these objections by an absolute majority of the entire membership-vote. Organic laws, which govern basic civil rights and regional devolutions, need an absolute majority of both the Chamber and the Senate to pass.

since podemos got more deputies for congress this time than the time before, i wonder why podemos is complaining exactly?

i also wonder what would happen if spain fails to form government this time. will they continue calling elections?

Iglesias' goal was to become PM in a coalition with the socialists.

At some point the parties will have to explore more options in coalitions, bite the bullet, replace people.

The polls predicted a breakthrough for Podemos but in reality there were no gains:

CHAMBER
Partido Popular (Prime Minister Rajoy) 137 seats (+ 14)
PSOE (Labour Party) 85 seats (- 5)
Podemos 71 seats (no change)
Ciudadanos (Liberals) 32 (- 8)
and a few smaller parties

SENATE
Partido Popular 151 senators
PSOE (Labour Party) 63 senators
Podemos 23 senators
and a few smaller parties
