King Felipe VI and Government formations

They think that the political crisis in Spain will be solved tomorrow?

Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias said he would vote against a coalition between the Socialists and pro-market Ciudadanos so Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez has to decide whether to join a progressive alliance with his group or form a so-called grand coalition with the incumbent People’s Party.

“There are only two alternatives: a three-way accord between the Socialists, Ciudadanos and the PP, or a progressive government with us,” Iglesias said after meeting King Felipe VI in Madrid on Monday afternoon.

Its a worrying state of affairs - for the stability of Spain and for the monarchy. I hope that this lack of political stability isn't the beginning of the end for the Monarchy.
On the other hand if these new set of talks work out the role of the King will likely be praised in bringing it about. Its all on the edge at the moment and could go either way

If there is no grand coalition, there will be elements in government that want to give up a unified Spain and independence for their regions as well as get rid of the monarchy.
I don't think the danger is to the monarchy but rather that those partners are not reliable what makes a possible solution very unstable for governing.

He scrubs up well! Firebrand dons tuxedo for film awards - The Local

Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias stunned Spain on Saturday night when he wore a tuxedo. Iglesias told reporters that he had decided to wear the tuxedo as a "mark of respect for Spanish cinema".

Many Spaniards pointed out that Iglesias had afforded more respect to Spain's film industry than he had to the country's monarch, with whom he has met twice, both times in jeans, trainers and an open-collar shirt.

There are very high chances that Sanchez fails again on Friday... and then King Felipe will have a big problem, because no law says exactly how he should act in this case.

I met Spanish friends today, they agree ... saying its a mess, they do not like any of the candidates and expect new elections that might end in deadlock again.

Thank you for keeping this thread updated. It really seems a hot mess.

The political situation is becoming the King agenda into chaos. On the one hand, the political neutrality required forces him to choose the events they can attend, to not disturb any political group. On the other the need to be available to suit the political calendar makes it impossible to organize the agenda in advance and forced to cancel trips.

The official visit to Saudi Arabia in February and the State Visit to the UK in March have been canceled.

If finally the day is free, King Felipe could attend on Wednesday, March 9 the inauguration of the new President of Portugal, if not King Juan Carlos will attend.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia planned to travel next week to Puerto Rico for the Congress of the Spanish Language. They should also travel in April to Japan and Korea, and Queen Letizia should make her annual cooperation trip. All these trips are unconfirmed, and may be canceled.

Must members of the Royal Family always be accompanied by politicians? I know they are not there for audiences at the Palace but I've noticed that a Minister of some department is usually at outside events. Is this a requirement by law?

Yes, usually they are accompanied in many of their events by Ministers or Secretaries of State. Also they are usually accompanied by representatives of autonomous regions or mayors.

In pre or post election period the audiences, the military events for the King and for Queen meetings with her charities fill the agenda because the presence of politicians is not necessary.

The problem is that this time the government formation process is taking months, and the situation between the political parties is very difficult.
