With 18 pages of replies already, I hesitated to add another, but I suppose in events like the birth of a baby, well wishes are never really redundant.

So I shall wish great joy to the Spanish royals, and a long and happy life for the Infanta. Congratulations! What wondrous news.

Oh - and I am CRAZY about the name! It's gorgeous!

Madrid, SPAIN: Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero gives a press conference to congratulate Spanish Crown Prince Felipe and his wife Letizia for the birth of their daughter Leonor, 31 October 2005 at La Moncloa Palace in Madrid. Princess Letizia, the wife of Spanish Crown Prince Felipe, gave birth early Monday to the couple's first child, a baby girl named Leonor, intensifying a debate within the country over the royal succession. Baptismal font of Infanta Leonor
http://www.hola.com/abonados/casasre...ila-bautismal/

The font belongs to the Chapel of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. It was used for the children of King Alfonso XIII: Don Jaime, Dona Beatriz and Don Juan. Later, used for Don Juan Carlos (King Juan Carlos I), Infanta Elena, Infanta Christina and Prince Felipe.

**I tried following Spanish, which I am afraid alludes me. So, if I have made any mistake, kindly overlook. Thanks*

Just wodnering, but is it usual for the Spanish PM to make a hospital visit? Or has this coccurred becuase of the likely change in Constitution and the fact that she is the daughter of the Crown Prince. I'd really appreciate it if someone would let me know.

On a completely diffeent note, the Grandparents on both sides are glowing with excitement (Sofia looks magnificent in that red suit). And as for the Daddy, he looks very proud and cute and very handsome!

From Hola: http://www.hola.com/abonados/casasre...leonor-nombre/

Leonor, a name with deep historical roots
Eleonor of Aquitanie, mother of Richard, the Lionheart or Queen Leonor of Navarra, some of her ilustrious "namesakes"

OCTOBER 31 2005

She's called Leonor. The name, confirmed the Prince of Asturias, was one of his favorites, not just because of the name itself and for its sound, but also because the history behind it. And they chose it at the last moment, a choice that has surprised everyone, since it wasn't present in any of the lists released during the pregnancy with the probable name of the firstborn of the princes.

Leonor, an historic name

Some say that it has arabic origin and means "God is my light", others tell about its Greek roots (Leocadia) and that it means “the one who lights everything with her whiteness”; and there's also the ones who talk about Latin etymology, from the Luna-Elena group. Independently of its roots, Leonor has been the name of distinguished European queens, among them doña Eleonor of Aquitanie, the mother of Richard, the Lionheart and John Lackland, a free woman, daring with a high cultural level. Eleonor of Aquitanie, among the eight children she had with the Count of Anjou (Henry II, King of England), had a girl, Leonor. At the age of ten she was promised to Alfonso de Castilla. At 11, she was sent to Spain. At fifteen she married, in love, Alfonso de Castilla. Her work in the Castillian court is remembered by her generosity and by her concern about the people. She asked her husband to build asylums and hospitals for the needy. Her husband, Alfonso VIII, was in the famous battle of las Navas de Tolosa and doña Leonor herself went to the battlefield to be by his side. The marriage results in five daughters, one of them with the name Leonor. And a great granddaughter with the same name that got married in Las Huelgas with an English King, (Edward I).

Leonor, name of queen and princess

In 1420 Leonor, Queen of Navarra was born, she was the daughter of Juan II of Aragón and of Blanca of Navarra. In 1479, after the death of her father, Juan II, she was crowned Queen with the support of Fernando, the Catholic King. However, she had only a month as queen. A brief reign for the last queen Leonor of Spain. But there are a lot more queen or princesses called Leonor:

Leonor of Alburquerque (1435), queen of Aragón, niece of Enrique II of Castilla, and wife of Fernando de Antequera, of whom she was queen consort (1412);

Leonor de Castilla (1310-1359), queen of Aragón. Was murdered under orders of Pedro El Cruel, because of favouring Enrique de Trastámara;

Leonor de Aragón (1358-1382), queen of Castilla, 1379-1382.

In Portugal, other Leonor carried the Portuguese crown: Leonor of Asturia, or Leonor Téllez de Meneses.

We can't forget as well, Leonor of Habsburgo, the first daughter of Juana La Loca and Felipe El Hermoso, sister of Carlos I de España and V of Germany. She married the king of France, Francisco I.

King Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía went to the Ruber Clinic, to know their granddaughter, Infanta Leonor, who was born last night. Both were "enchanted" with the birth of the daughter of the Princes of Asturias and they did not dare to say if she resembles more the father or the mother. Doña Sofía described the new born as "chubby, round" and " also quite weeper", although she added that, when they left the clinic, at noon, she was asleep. Don Juan Carlos added that the the girl measures 47 cm.

Their Majestys confirmed that Don Felipe also attended the childbirth "until the last moment" and that, neither they, nor the parents knew the sex of the baby. They said that the date of he baptism is not known yet nor who will be the godparents.

The Infantas and the rest of the Royal Family have still not gone to the Ruber Clinic, because they are all outside Madrid, "but they will come", said the Queen.

Besides, the King, when asked about the chosen name, said that the reason for the choice is that the parents "like it" and Leonor is the name of a "Queen of Navarre, Aragón and also of Portugal", commented the monarch, before leaving the Clinic. The Queen returned to the room, after speaking to the journalists.

This is fabulous news!!!!!!
Congrats to the family!!

I looooove the name Leanor, it reminds me of Elanor of Aquitaine. I read a biography on her and she was such an intriguing and unique woman. What a life she led!!!! I hope that little infanta Leanor will lead a full, happy and healthy life & grow to be of strong & wise character in this tough world and restrictive postion that she has been born into. There will be so many expectations that will be placed upon her whether or not she becomes queen or remains infanta and I hope that her family gives her the tools and guides her so that she can achieve her destiny!

In regards to some comments posted earlier in the thread that Felipe did not look happy, is it possible that he was concerned and worried for the health and well being of his wife and daughter considering the unplanned c-section and the early arrival of the baby? That would cause anyone great distress especially considering Felipe's sister had suffered a miscarraige last year. I'm not saying that Letezia would miscarry but Felipe is certainly not naive to complications......

I'm absolutely thrilled. I thought they would have a girl!

YIPPPEEEEE!!!!!!

The Royal House asked the organization in charge of the management of the Internet a block to all the sites that directly or indirectly allude to the name of Leonor, after the birth of the first-born of the Princes of Asturias.

Congratulations to the royal parents and the people of Spain!

I watched TVE for about 3 hours in a row, to see the news! I just couldn´t stop watching the news, even if they were repeating the stories. I love to see images of the beautiful couple.

I hope the constitution changes and Infanta Eleanor become the future Qjueen of Spain! (I never understood why the baby boy has the right to be king instead of the baby girl...)
