2nd Nobel Laureates Conference

Elie Wiesel hopes conference will help Mideast peace efforts

Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel said Thursday that he hoped that high-level Israeli and Palestinian officials would come together to explore ways of restarting peace efforts at a conference of Nobel laureates next week in Jordan.
. . .
Thirty Nobel Prize winners are to meet in the Jordanian city of Petra on Tuesday and Wednesday to consider ways in which they might use their influence and moral authority to help find solutions to some of the world's most dire problems.

The second conference co-sponsored by foundations headed by Wiesel and King Abdullah of Jordan is convening amid a surge in Israeli-Palestinian violence and a bloody power struggle between Hamas, the Islamic party that now runs the Palestinian government, and the Fatah party of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
. . .
The conference, called "Petra II: A World Endangered," also will consider other threats to global security, including religious fanaticism, poverty and environmental degradation.

The laureates plan to launch an initiative to resolve the crisis in Sudan's Darfur region.

Looks like the Dalai Lama is attending the event again this year. It should be an inspirational gathering.

Jordan seeks to convene a meeting between Abbas and Olmert this week (AP)

AMMAN, Jordan - Jordan is seeking to convene a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of an international gathering in the kingdom later this week, officials said on Tuesday.

Olmert and Abbas will both be attending the Nobel laureates meeting, which will open Wednesday in Jordan’s famed tourist attraction, Petra, the officials told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Israeli Embassy press attache Jacob Raber confirmed that Olmert would arrive in Jordan’s Red Sea resort of Aqaba on Thursday for talks with King Abdullah II and then attend the second and last day of the Nobel laureates meeting in Petra, farther north. Khaleej Times

Dozens of Nobel laureates and international public figures will convene for the second time here on Wednesday to discuss and define their roles in responding to global crises. While the conference is slated to bring some of the world's greatest minds together to tackle the problems of "A World in Danger," much of the talk among delegates, journalists and guests is of a possible Thursday meeting between Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
. . . .
"King Abdullah is hosting a breakfast for a number of participants on Thursday morning; among the invitees are the prime minister of Israel and the president of the Palestinian National Authority," Bassem Awadallah, director-general of King Abdullah's office, told reporters yesterday. Uma Thurman had a Buddhist upbringing, her dad was a Buddhist scholar and later the first western monk, the Dalai Lama was an occasional guest in her home.
Richard Gere, also Buddhist, was at last year's conference with the Dalai Lama.

King Inaugurates Nobel Laureates Conference

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim; In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Elie,
My friends,
Good morning. It is an honour to welcome all of you to this, the second Petra Conference. Last year, Elie and I had a vision: a global partnership of Nobel Laureates and achievers … leaders who could turn their intellectual gifts and experience, to finding answers to the serious problems of our time. Petra One began this unprecedented effort. This year, your discussions will carry the work forward and initiate positive change.

Creative and courageous thinking does make a difference. Thanks to work by you and many others, the 21st century has brought better lives to billions of people. But other billions have not shared in the promise. That break runs through our world like a fault-line. We cannot build a secure future on a divided foundation.

rest of the speech can be found here

Amman, June 21 (Petra)-- The International Herald Tribune published an article written by His Majesty King Abdullah II in Wednesday's edition.

"A responsibility to make peace"

War has a terrible cost. But peace also has a cost, especially when generations of conflict demonstrate that the only path to peace is the acknowledgement and settlement of painful and legitimate grievances.

To achieve peace, patterns of fear, resentment, mistrust and indifference to the suffering of others must be broken. Sides that have long defined themselves in opposition to each other must create a new psychology. Societies and individuals alike must reorient themselves to a future that rewards productivity and cooperation, not confrontation.
. . . .

It is time for nations and world- renowned figures alike to stand behind the commitment to peace, as a group of Nobel laureates and other leaders are doing this week at the Petra II conference. Real peace agreements are not just written on paper, but also inscribed on hearts. For that to occur we must help people on both sides believe that making a difficult peace is far less costly than continuing a destructive conflict.
