Dalai Lama Participates in Second Petra Conference of Nobel Laureates

The Dalai Lama is among the more than two dozen Nobel Laureates participating in the Conference of Nobel Laureates, Petra II: A World in Danger in the Jordanian town of Petra, which began on June 21, 2006.

In his inaugural address, Jordan's King Abdullah underscored the need to benefit from the leadership and knowledge of Nobel Prize winners in boosting long-term development and called for giving special focus on settling conflicts, stressing that peace largely relies on the trust upon which it is built, according to a UPI report from Petra.

"The Nobel Prize recognizes that the sources of human progress are to be found in every corner of the globe," said King Abdullah. "The intellect, knowledge and talent of the world's Nobel Laureates have brought better lives to millions of people in our world, and this week, we have a unique opportunity to have them apply their highly innovative minds to some of the most pressing contemporary global problems."

Some 25 Nobel laureates in chemistry, economics, literature, medicine and peace along with 30 celebrities will seek, for the second year running, to deal with some of the world's most intractable problems tomorrow and Thursday.

Summit planned after Israeli and Palestinian leaders meet

The Israeli Prime Minister and the Palestinian President agreed at an informal meeting in Jordan today to hold a summit in the next few weeks.

The breakfast hosted by Jordan’s King Abdullah in the ancient town of Petra was the first time Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas had met since the Israeli leader took office last month. The two men shook hands, embraced and kissed each other on the cheek, in a greeting Mr Abbas described as very warm. Times Online

Petra III to launch science fund

A science fund to support scientific projects and research in the region will be launched at the upcoming conference of Nobel laureates in Petra, a senior official said on Wednesday.

"This fund will assist academic and scientific institutions in the region in general, to carry out necessary research and studies that will reflect on sustainable development," Deputy Director of the King Abdullah II Fund for Development Bassem Awadallah told Al Rai and The Jordan Times yesterday. Youth from around the Middle East will have a leading voice at this year's conference of Nobel Laureates in Petra, Jordan from May 15-16.

. . . This year's event will have a prominent focus on youth that will also extend to a discussion of how to enhance educational opportunities for youth in the Middle East, in particular by overcoming the information deficit.

The focus on youth reflects a broader concern in the region to create systems and structures that can ensure a high quality of life and opportunities for the region's largest youth cohort in history as it comes of age. Today, more than half the region's population is below the age of 18. Ameinfo

Commentary: The peacemakers are back
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Claude Salhani, Middle East Times
May 15, 2007

PETRA, Jordan -- They gathered again, the peacemakers, coming from every corner of the world to the historic Nabbatean city of Petra in Jordan for the third conference named after the magnificent ancient relic from the past.

They came again this year, as they have the last two years, at the behest of Jordan's King Abdullah II and Elie Wiesel. They are among the best minds on the planet - Nobel Laureates and leaders in politics, business, and other specialized fields of industry.

You're welcome!

I just hope there are more photos of the evening gala this time. Last time there were so few and even they were blurry in quality.

Central focus must be future of young people — King

PETRA — His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday inaugurated the Nobel laureates conference, urging the Nobel Prize winners to employ their experience to provide young people in the Middle East with tools to build their future and acquire useful knowledge.
Addressing participants at “Petra III: Building a Better World,” held in the Kingdom for the third consecutive year, the Monarch said it was necessary to prepare real initiatives in areas of concern — education, economic progress, health and the environment — to help the youth in the region.
“More than half of our region’s population is below the age of 18. This represents a significant generation coming of age. These young people are the ones who will shape the future. It is for them I wish to speak today,” the Monarch said. Jordan Times

Conflict, economic hurdles consuming lives, hopes of millions in region — King

Bismillah Al Rahman Al Rahim,

Elie, Kofi, distinguished participants,

Nobel laureates change the world with a simple question — “What if?”
What if peace groups work together across the divides? What if there is a new way to give poor people economic power in their lives? What if the marvels of molecular science, laser optics and much, much more can be unlocked? What new possibilities for life would these discoveries create?

My friends,
The combined abilities in this room to imagine, create and produce solutions are immense. We, in Jordan, are honoured to have so many of the world’s great minds come to us today — Nobel laureates in peace, literature, physics, medicine, chemistry, and economics. We are also honoured to have many other thought leaders come to us today from throughout the Middle East and beyond. We are honoured that so many world-renowned leaders from the public and private sectors are also able to join us at this forum. Rest of the Speech

Help youth end conflict, Nobel laureates urged

“We are witnessing a rare opportunity and this is truly good to be able to sit down with Palestinian and Israeli students to discuss our mutual concerns,” said 27-year-old Israeli university student Assaf Dahrhaft.
Nisreen Mohamed, 25, who works in a Palestinian media organisation, said Arabs were fed up with war and hardship. “It is time our political leaders sit around the table of negotiations and find us a way out of this conflict.” Gulf Times

THE Petra Nobel Laureates conference unfolded for the third year in this historic Jordanian town without a hitch; but what should have been smooth sailing ran into troubled waters with somewhat of a controversy arising at the closing session.

Ilana Meallem and Mazen Zoabi left a recent morning meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II smiling. The king had just proposed the formation of a regional science fund, and they were certain they would have access to it.
The two Israelis -- project managers at the Arava Institute, an environmental study and research center in southern Israel -- were among a small group of people in their 20s from Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and other Arab countries occupying a visible role at a conference of Nobel laureates in Petra.
