I found this very interesting article about interior designers in the Middle East and how they are breaking through. One of the designers featured is Nada Debs, whose profile was boosted by Queen Rania:

"Her break came when Jordan's Queen Rania commissioned her to create the children's wings of the palaces in Amman. However, getting her furniture business off the ground in Lebanon proved tricky. Retailers told her that local consumers were not interested in local designers, so she was forced to open her own furniture showroom. 'Arab designers will have to make it outside the Arab world before they will be accepted here,' she says."

Queen Rania, Prince Talal lay cornerstone for Arab Open University

From Petra News Agency :

"...Amman, June 26 (Petra)-- Two steadfast advocates for promoting educational opportunities, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah and His Royal Highness Prince Talal Ben Abdul Aziz, joined forces, Tuesday, to lay the cornerstone for the Arab Open University's campus in Jordan.

The real wealth of this university is its 'openness' to new technology, to new learning methodologies, and most importantly, to those seeking knowledge – the young man in a rural area too far from a university town, to a working mother who still wants to learn after she puts her children to bed at night, to a retiree who hasn’t quenched his thirst for learning and still has a lot to offer society," said the Queen...."

The working relationship between Queen Rania and Prince Talal goes back several years.
They’ve worked together on micro-credit intiatives, including the launch of the National Microfinance Bank (see article below) in Amman last year, the first institution of its kind in the Arab world. In November of last year, Prince Talal, along with Queen Rania, took part in a meeting of the board of trustees of the Arab Open University. This is his follow-up visit, to lay a cornerstone for the university's campus in Jordan.

About Jordan's National Bank for microfinancing:

Prince Talal commends Jordan's microcredit experiment

"Jordan's experiment in establishing banks for the poor has proved to be a leading one at the Arab level," Prince Talal said during a visit to the bank on Tuesday. The success of this experiment has far exceeded similar initiatives in the region despite the short period of establishing the bank, about 15 months, he added. Prince Talal attributed the marked achievement to decentralization approach adopted by Jordan freeing such project from impeding bureaucracies.

. . . The National Bank is a copy of Garmeen Bank established in Bangladesh by the micro-credit guru and Noble Prize Winner Prof. Muhammad, as one of the effective means to curb poverty and unemployment through increasing productivity and improving living conditions of poor families and women in particular.
