Royal Fiancé Receives Swine Flu Vaccine, Royal Family Wait in Line

November 1st, 2009

Daniel Westling, the fiancé of HRH Crown Princess Victoria, has been confirmed as receiving the much-sought-after Influenza A (H1N1), ie. swine flu, vaccine.

Westling is considered to be in the high-risk group after undergoing a kidney transplant in May this year. The high-risk category includes pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems (cancer patients, HIV/AIDS sufferers), and people who fall into the seasonal flu vaccine at-risk group (as Daniel does).

Nina Eldh, the head of communications at the Royal Court, confirmed the news to Swedish newspaper Expressen. Eldh also confirmed that Westling is the only member of the Royal Family to have been vaccinated. “The National Board of Health and Welfare has recommended the vaccine. They [the Royal Family] will have it when it is available,” she said.

The Royal Family is believed to be receiving the vaccine in the coming weeks. TM King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia have previously spoken of their wish to be vaccinated against the influenza which has killed just over 6,000 people worldwide since the first outbreak was confirmed in Mexico.

Daniel Westling is not the only European royal to be vaccinated. Last week, the Norwegian Royal Court confirmed that the senior branch of the family (the King, Queen and Crown Prince Couple) had received the vaccine.

Bomb Scare for Swedish Princess

October 16th, 2009

A suspicious package caused the bomb squad to decend on the World Childhood Foundation headquarters in New York City on Tuesday, October 14th.

The package, which was addressed to HRH Princess Madeleine, the youngest child of TM King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, was found to contain mix tapes, undergarments, a love letter to the Princess and a proposal – but no bomb.

Anika Sonnerberg, a spokeswoman for the royal court, spoke to the New York Post following the incident, confirming that all security protocol was followed with regards to the package. “The security scanned it as they always do with packages sent to the royal family. There was nothing dangerous in it,” she said.

A police investigation is currently underway, with the US State Department believed to have been called in to assist the NYPD in locating the package’s sender.

Princess Madeleine, who is on a month-long visit to New York to work with the Foundation, was not in the building at the time of the incident. Queen Silvia will join her daughter later this month for the Foundation’s 10th anniversary gala.

Placido Domingo has performed in 130 different parts through his career and won the prize for his “unrivaled” contributions to the world of opera. In a very emotional speech, Domingo said it was “unbelievable” to stand on the stage where Nilsson had performed so many times. He called her “one of the greatest artists, if not the greatest.”

The prize is worth 1 million dollars and is one of the biggest prizes in classical music. The prize is to be awarded every second or third year ‘for outstanding achievement’ in the international field of opera, concert or oratorio. Birgit Nilsson died in December 2005 at age 87. She selected the Spanish tenor herself.

In November the book “Victoria – rottning med tiden” (Victoria – Queen of the time”) will be released. Herman Lindqvist was Victoria’s private history teacher and the Royal Family of Sweden feels confident with him. It’s a good time to release a book about Victoria, marking next year’s big wedding and also the 200th throne anniversary of the Bernadotte dynasty.

In the book you can read among others about Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf’s concerns for the selection of their daughter’s boyfriend. Victoria says: “They wanted to clear that I would get the best possible support and backing for my job now and in the future. How could they know that Daniel could give me that? How would he do it?”

The book “Victoria – Queen of the time” is available to buy in shops from 17 November. A thread about the book can be found here.
