Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah has accepted the resignation the prime minister and his cabinet, Kuwaiti official Television reported on Monday. Kuwait’s government resignation comes after the Islamist lawmakers submitted three requests to question Prime Minister Sheikh Naser Mohammed Al Ahmad Al Sabah on political crisis. It is the fourth time the cabinet has resigned in two years. The last cabinet resigned in November after a similar request to question the prime minister, who has been accused of mismanagement. Questioning the prime minister has never been allowed in Kuwait and the current one, Sheik Nasser al-Mohamed al-Ahmad al-Sabah, is the emir’s nephew.
The emir may either appoint a new prime minister or dissolve Parliament which would lead to early elections.

Al Jazeera television reported on Tuesday that Kuwait’s ruler has decided to dissolve parliament after Islamist lawmakers asked to question the prime minister over his government’s handling of the economic crisis.
Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Kuwait quoted parliamentary sources as saying Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah, who has the last word in politics, would issue a decree to dissolve parliament.
This is not the first time the emir dissolves a problem in the government. A year ago, the emir dissolved parliament to end a row between MPs and the cabinet.
Kuwait’s parliament is the most outspoken in the region. Its mostly governed by ruling families. Rows between the government and members of parliament have often led to cancellation of government projects and delays in proposed reforms.

After an unexpected visit to Baghdad on 10 February, President Nicholas Sarkozy of France visited the Gulf States of Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait to confer with the rulers of those countries on both military and civilian issues. This visit follows visits by the President in 2008 to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, which also led to agreemements, most significantly an agreement for France to set up a military base in the UAE and also a deal for development of nuclear energy.
During the most recent trip, President Sarkozy signed a declaration about nuclear energy and an agreement for a French military base in Bahrain (similar to last year’s agreements with the UAE), and an agreement on health care in Oman.
This series of trips and agreements is likely to make France one of the most significant players, if not the most significant, in the Middle East in the early 21st century.
