It was announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have stepped down from their position as senior members of the royal family, without consulting Buckingham Palace beforehand.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced in an Instagram post that they “were to step back as senior members of the royal family” in order to create a “progressive new role within this institution”.

It was also announced that the couple would be spending time between England and North America, where the Duchess of Sussex hails from, explaining that they will be able to raise their baby son Archie “with an appreciation for the royal tradition in which he was born”, while also providing them “the space to focus on the next chapter”.

It is reported that members of the royal family reacted negatively to the news, with some of the media adding that the Queen was “deeply disappointed”. In October 2019, it was announced that the Duke of Sussex had filed a law suit against the Mail on Sunday for publishing the Duchess’s private letters.

The couple married in May 2018 at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle and their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was born on 6 May 2019.
