On 30 April, the Swedish royals celebrated King Carl Gustaf’s seventy-third birthday with the annual gathering at the Royal Palace of Stockholm.

His wife, Queen Silvia, was also in attendance, as were Crown Princess Victoria and her children Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar and Prince Carl Philip. King Carl Gustaf is the longest reigning monarch and has surpassed King Magnus IV’s 44 year long reign.

Carl Gustaf was crowned on 19 September 1973 and a year later, the 1974 Instrument of Government stripped the king of most of his political powers, reducing him to a representative role.

He married Silvia Sommerlath in 1976 and was the first reigning monarch to marry for over a century in Sweden. They have three children; Crown Princess Victoria (who has two children; Princess Estelle (b. 2012) and Prince Oscar (b. 2016), Prince Carl Philip (who has two children; Prince Alexander (b. 2016) and Prince Gabriel (b. 2017) and Princess Madeleine, who has three children; Princess Leonore (b. 2014), Prince Nicolas (b. 2015) and Princess Adrienne (b. 2018).
