State Visit from Cabo Verde to the Netherlands – Day One

At the invitation of King Willem-Alexander, the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde, Jorge Carlos de Almeida Fonseca and his wife, Lígia Dias Fonseca started yesterday, Monday December 10, a two-day state visit to the Netherlands.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima officially received the President and his wife with a welcoming ceremony held at Dam Square in Amsterdam. The King and the President inspected a guard of honor and the national anthems were played.
In the afternoon King Willem-Alexander accompanied the President at the National Maritime Museum. After a visit at the library of the museum took place a roundtable discussion focused on maritime development, wind energy, infrastructure and sustainable tourism. At the discussion were present Dutch and Cabo Verdean companies.
In the evening took place a State Banquet. Princess Beatrix was among the guests.
The King started his speech by expressing the delight for the visit, then he praised Cabo Verdeans because “They were survivors and hard workers, with big hearts and a strong sense of solidarity. Always willing to help a neighbor out. Always willing to share what they had with others”.
Prior to the banquet King Willem-Alexander received from the President the Order of Amilcar Cabral while Queen Maxima received the medal of merit, the Medalha de Mérito.
