Dutch King and Queen Visit Curaçao: July 1-2

At the invitation of the Governor of Curaçao, Lucille George-Wout and on the occasion of the celebration of Dia di Bandera, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima paid a two-day visit in Curaçao, the Dutch Caribbean.

Upon their arrival, on the afternoon of Sunday July 1st, the Royal Couple went to the Fort Amsterdam, in Willemstad, where they were officially welcomed by the Governor.
Afterwards they met with the Minister-President of Curaçao, Eugene Rhuggenaath and members of the Council of Ministers of Curaçao.


Then the King and the Queen were present at the inauguration of the new Mega Cruise Pier II that was built to receive the largest cruise ships.
The Royal Couple also visited the shipyard of Damen Shipyards, a Dutch shipbuilding company.


In the evening the Governor Lucille George-Wout hosted a reception held at her official residence at Fort Amsterdam. During the reception King Willem-Alexander awarded the Honor Cross of the House Order of Orange to Mr. Herman George, husband of the Governor.
On Monday July 2, Dia di Bandera, national holiday of Curaçao, the King and the Queen met with the States members and representatives of the High Councils of State.
Then they participated at the official festivities of Dia di Bandera held on the Brionplein square in Willemstad at the presence of States members, Ministers and other guests. The program of the festivities included a dance performance by Fundashon Kas di Kultura Kòrsou and a parade.


Later the Royal Couple paid a visit to the Festival di Pueblo, a festival that shows the Curaçao culture and folklore with exhibitions and performances.

In the afternoon the King and the Queen visited the Excel Arts Academy that won Appeltje van Oranje last June and then met with the participants of Opportunities for Youth Caribs from the Oranje Fonds, a program that aims to give opportunities to vulnerable young people in the Caribbean Part of the Kingdom.
