Upon their arrival the Royal Couple was welcomed by Peter den Oudsten, Mayor of Groningen and René Paas, commissioner of the King in the province of Groningen. Around 40,000 people visited the city center to participate in the festivities. During the two hours of the visit the Royal Family walked through the city center participating in the activities organized for the event including sports, music, dancing and culture.

At the end of the festivities, the Royal Family attended the performances of the band Kensington and the Noord Nederlands Orkest that guided the musical performances of various Groningen artists, among the others Izaline Calister who sang “Mien Grunneger stad”.

King Willem-Alexander thanked the city of Groningen for the organization of the Koningsdag and he also praised the city saying: “We are proud of you. We are proud of this young city, full of innovative strength and full of resilience”.

Queen Maxima wore a total Natan look with a red embroidery dress with skin-colored tulle and a bright red coat paired with red shoes and beret.
