To mark the starting of the events, the King and Queen rang the bells of the Oldehove Church which is located in the medievial centre of the city of Leeuwarden.
During this year the province of Friesland will host 250 cultural events. Since 1985, two European cities have been elected European Capital of Culture annually with the purpose to “highlight not only the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe but also the common characteristics”. Each capital establishes a program that highlights their historical and cultural heritage.
