The Romanian Royal Family has announced a short time ago the death of former King Mihai I. He was 96.

King Mihai passed away today at his home in Aubonne, Switzerland, at 1pm Romanian local time. His youngest daughter, Princess Maria, was at his bedside.

The former King – one of only three living World War II heads of state – had been in ill health for some time. He was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2016, which severely compromised his health since.

The Royal Family’s statement said that full funeral details will be released tomorrow, but that the King’s body will lie in state at Peleș Castle and then at the Royal Palace of Bucharest. The funeral service will be held at Bucharest’s Romanian Orthodox Patriarchal Cathedral, and the King will be buried at the Cathedral of Curtea de Argeș.

Crown Princess Margareta, eldest daughter of King Mihai and his late wife, Queen Anne, will made a public statement at 7pm this evening, Romanian local time.
