Last Day in India for Philippe and Mathilde

Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians started the fifth and last day of their Indian state visit by playing cricket at the sporting ground Oval Maidan.

At the event were present school children, and former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, who works together with UNICEF India to promote the importance of sport among children.

Then, at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the King laid a wreath at the memorial that commemorates those who were killed in the 2008 terrorist attack at the hotel. Afterwards King Philippe was present at the opening of the summit “Belgian-Indian Cleantech Summit: Solutions for Smart Cities and Industries”, followed by a luncheon with Indian and Belgian company leaders.

Queen Mathilde, in the meantime, paid a visit to the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation. The foundation was established in 1955 is a not-for-profit organization that promotes western classical music and music education for the children. During the visit the Queen attended a musical performance by 15 students.

In the afternoon the Royal Couple visited the National Domestic Workers’ Movement, an organization funded in 1985 by the Belgian Religious Sister and missionary, Jeanne Devos. This organization works in 17 states of India and aims to encourage the empowerment of domestic workers through solidarity, participation and leadership training. The King and the Queen were informed by Sister Jeanne about the activities of the organization and talked with some members.

In the evening, at the Tata Theater of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), took place a musical performance of the Scala & Kolacny Brothers, a Belgian girls’ choir.
