Queen Maxima Visits the Hofstad Lyceum in The Hague

Today, Wednesday November 8, Queen Maxima paid a working visit to the Hofstad Lyceum in The Hague.

This school was the first in The Hague that, in 2013, signed the Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA). The GSA is a project run by students from high school or middle school that aims to provide a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and works to end homophobia and transphobia.

The project is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Education and COC, a Dutch organization that offers personal support, support groups and information to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT).

During her visit, the Queen met with some students involved and the project and she was informed about the activities of the school, like organizing action against bullying or discussion about homosexuality and having a different orientation. One of these activities will take place on December 8 and it is called “Purple Friday”, when the students will wear purple clothes to show solidarity to the LGBT youth.

The GSA project is active in about 200 schools in the Netherlands and also in the Carribean.
