The King and Queen of Spain presented the 2017 Princess of Girona Foundation awards on Thursday evening in a ceremony at the Girona Conference Centre.

King Felipe praised the work of the Foundation and the young people of the region, particularly in their combined efforts to improve youth employment, in a speech he delivered during the ceremony.

This year’s laureates were: for Scientific Research, Héctor Gómez Díaz; for Arts and Literature, Juan Zamora González; for Social Efforts, Miriam Reyes Oliva; for Business, Damià Tormo Carulla; and Internationally, Teach a Man To Fish.

In 2009, the Prince of Girona Foundation was established to “provide social value through the support of young people”. King Felipe, then the Prince of Asturias, was named its Honorary President, a role that is now held by his elder daughter and heir, Princess Leonor (and thus the change to ‘Princess’ of Girona Foundation).

2.8million€ is allocated to social programs by the Foundation for 2017.
