Luxembourg Celebrates Its National Day

It was National Day in Luxembourg on Friday, and there was a smaller showing of Grand Ducal family members for this year’s celebrations: Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa were only joined by Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie throughout the day, as opposed to several of their children as we have become accustomed to seeing.

The royal quartet began the day at the Philharmonie Luxembourg for a ceremony where orders and national medals of merit are awarded to citizens for remarkable works. The Grand Duke delivered a speech during the event, where he said implored the country to put their disagreements aside and “look at what we have in common and what makes our nation”.

It was then on to the traditional military parade, before a multi-faith Te Deum at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg lead by the leaders of the Catholic, Jewish and Muslim faiths in Luxembourg. Both royal ladies brought out bright, eye-catching colours for the day: the Grand Duchess in a red dress and coat by Yves Dooms, Princess Stephanie in a fuchsia pink caped dress.

National Day was rounded off by a gala dinner at the Grand Ducal Palace for guests from official Luxembourg: the government, the Chamber of Deputies, the judiciary and the ambassadors assigned to Luxembourg.
