At the Stockholm Concert Hall this evening, King Carl XVI Gustaf presented the 2017 Polar Music Prize to British rocker Sting and American jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter.

The King was joined by Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, and Princess Christina and Tord Magnuson. After the awards ceremony – which included a number of musical performances in tribute to the two laureates – a gala banquet was held at the Grand Hotel.

The Prize – which comes with a monetary prize of 1,000,000SKK – is awarded annually to two musicians, one contemporary and one classical, by the Stig Anderson Music Award Foundation for “international recognition of excellence in the world of music”.
