Today, Wednesday June 7, Queen Mathilde was present at the opening ceremony of European Development Days (EDD) 2017 at the cultural center Tour & Taxis in Brussels. The theme of the 11th edition of European Development Days is “Investing in Development”.

The forum, organized by the European Commission, aims to bring together the development community with debates, panels, and special events in order to share ideas, experiences, innovative solutions to the world challenges.

In her speech the Queen stressed the importance to take care of vulnerable people, like children who are suffering in armed conflict and separated from their parents; but also women and young girls that live in countries where access to education is not sufficiently guaranteed or their autonomy is limitated.

Queen Mathilde hosted a lunch in the Castle of Laeken to the advocates of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

In January 2016, the Queen was appointed a member of the Advocacy Group for Sustainable Development (Sustainable Development Goals – SDGs).
