Queen Máxima in Vietnam: May 30-June 1

As special advocate of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Inclusive Finance for Development, Her Majesty Queen Máxima paid a three-day visit to Vietnam from Tuesday May 30 to Friday June 1.

Upon her arrival in Vietnam on Tuesday, the Queen went to the provincial town of Da Lat where she visited farms that are participating in the development project “Horti Da Lat”. The project, supported by the Dutch bank Rabobank and the food consulting company Fresh Studio, provides financing and technical support to the farmers that receive loans for the construction of greenhouses and business advice.

Then the Queen talked with some farmers and in the afternoon, in Ho Chi Minh City, she had several meetings organized by the International Finance Corporation with representatives of agricultural businesses and civil society organisations about the financing of agricultural activities.

On Wednesday, Queen Máxima moved to the capital Hanoi for a day of meetings. The Queen was received by Vietnam’s President Tran Dai Quang at the Presidential Palace for an audience. Then, at the Parliament House, she met with the Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and at the the headquarters of the State Bank of Vietnam she was received by Governor Le Minh Hung. The meeting with the Governor of the State Bank was focused on the development of Vietnam’s financial strategy.

Through the day Queen Máxima also had roundtable discussion with private partners, financial institutions and fintech companies; she also met with members of the World Bank Group (WB), the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the local UN office.

The third and last day of the visit began with several insitutional meetings: the Queen was received by Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue, the Minister of Finance Dinh Tien Dung, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong, and the Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung.

In the afternoon the Queen took part in a roundtable discussion titled “Strategic Framework for Financial Inclusion in Vietnam” at the presence of representatives of ministries and other organisations to prepare and coordinate the national strategy for inclusive finance.
