The Queen of Spain was in Seville on Thursday where she attended the annual conference at the Teatro de la Maestranza hosted by the Spanish Red Cross to mark World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

Held this year with the theme ‘Women, Commitment and Solidarity’, hundreds of individuals associated with the organisation from across the country were present. Queen Letizia – wearing a repeated grey embellished Carolina Herrera dress – gave a speech about the role of the Red Cross in promoting the rights of women around the world, in the different ways which are required in different locations.

“The Red Cross applies programs of all kinds to protect, watch and reinforce the role of women. It is not the same to fight against child marriages in some African countries as it is for us, in our relationships with neighbours or co-workers, always attentive to judgements sometimes expressed. It is not the same not to be able to go to school, to be deprived of adequate nutrition,” she said.

Queen Letizia also presented the Spanish Red Cross’s Gold Medals which recognise the “social commitment and solidarity work” of Spaniards.
