Belgian Royal Couple Host Reception For ‘Women of Peace’

Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde have celebrated International Women’s Day with several events.

Today, Wednesday March 8, the Royal Couple hosted a reception at the Royal Palace in Brussels for the laureates of the “Women of Peace” 2012, 2014 and 2016. This award, organized by Vrouwenraad, the Council of French Women and Platform 1325, is dedicated to the women are active in civil society, for women’s rights and for the building or maintaining peace and dialogue.

In the evening Queen Mathilde presented the Womed Award, a prize for the Businesswomen of the Year that is annually awarded by Markant, an organization that supports entrepreneurial women. It was also presented the Womed Award South that is dedicated to a woman entrepreneur in a developing country.

The Womed Award this year went to Eef Coolen, a landscape and garden architect that in 2014 started a business in the sustainable gardening. The Womed Award South went to Gloria Isabel Ambrosio from El Salvador that in 2013 started a cooperative enterprise.

Previously, on the eve of March 8, Queen Mathilde was in Mons, in the Province of Hainaut. In the Government Palace the Queen had a meeting with fifteen women from the Province that came from different sectors – athletes, businesswomen, artists, police inspectors – discussing “importance of the the role of women in the society and the reflection about the challenges and the expectations that live the women nowadays.”
