Tonga’s Queen Mother Dies

Her Majesty Queen Halaevalu Mata’aho, the Queen Mother of Tonga has died today, Sunday 19th February in a hospital in Auckland, New Zealand at the age of 90.

According to local reports, Queen Halaevalue Mata’aho – who was the widow of King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV – was flown to New Zealand last week with “minor health issues”. Her grandaughter, Princess Angelika Latufuipeka Mata’aho, was said to have been with her when she died.  Tonga’s King Tupou VI is currently visiting the remote island group of the Niuas.  Prayers will be held in Tonga’s parliament on Monday morning lead by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni.

Born on 29th May 1926, the Queen Mother was a great-granddaughter of the last King of the Tuʻi Tonga Empire. On 10th June 1947 she married Siaosi Tāufa‘āhau Tupoulahi, who later became King Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV upon the death of his mother, the well loved Queen Salote.  Queen Halaevalu Mata’aho in fact was the mother of two kings, George Tupou V and the current King.
