King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden joined Princess Benedikte of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg at the opening of the CHIO Aachen equestrian event in Aachen, Germany today. It is the largest equestrian event in the world.

The Queen, wearing a vibrant red outfit, officially opened the event, delivering a speech in front of the 40,000-strong audience after she and the King arrived in a horse-drawn carriage. Sweden is the partner country of the event for 2016, and thus the opening ceremony was held with a Swedish theme including Gotland ponies, midsummer dances and vikings.

Queen Silvia had also given a short interview published on the CHIO Aachen website in which she said that her two young granddaughters, Princesses Estelle and Leonore, were fans of horses: “Estelle loves horses and also the individual rituals that go hand in hand with them… At the age of just two, little Leonore has an incredible confidence in horses.”
