The King of Sweden turns 70 next weekend and in true Scandinavian style, a number of events have been planned over the course of this week to celebrate.

This evening the first event of the celebrations took place at the Royal Dramatic Theatre: a seminar entitled ‘An Evening about the Baltic Sea – Hopefulness and Threats’ arranged by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Society of Naval Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry.

It was attended by King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia (who chose a lovely elegant bright pink skirt suit that allowed her to stand out from the dark backdrop of the Theatre), Prince Daniel and Prince Carl Philip.

During the event several speakers gave talks and discussions on the Baltic Sea and its history, significance, and its current state.

The King himself gave a speech where he said that “the Baltic Sea has largely shaped out nation into what it is today. And we are now all involved in shaping its future. This is a great responsibility.”
