Princess Laurentien Opens International Book Fair in Colombia

As UNESCO Special Envoy for Literacy, Princess Laurentien attended the opening of the 29th edition of the International Book Fair of Bogota, Colombia, on Tuesday April 19.

Accompanied by Juan Manuel Santos Calderon, President of Colombia and Gina Parody, Minister of Education, Princess Laurentien inaugurated the pavillion of The Netherlands which is the guest of honors of this year’s edition. The International Book Fair of Bogota (FilBo) is one of the largest book fairs in Latin America. The theme of this year’s is Peace and for this reason the Dutch pavillion has an exhibition about Anne Frank entitled “Let Me Be Myself — the Story of Anne Frank”. In the Dutch pavillion are also presents authors from Curaçao and Aruba.

In her speech, held in Spanish, the Princess stressed the importance of the books because reading is an open world, a world of fantasy, humor and fun where people can think boundless.

During a meeting, Princess Laurentien was informed by the Minister of Education about the government’s education program which helped lots of people to read and write.

Also yesterday, Princess Laurentien was received by the Deputy Foreign Minister Patti Londoño at the Palacio the San Carlos, headquarter of the Foreign Ministry, where took place a meeting focused on education and culture.

Today, Wednesday April 20, Princess Laurentien visited the Public Library “Virgilio Barco”. Accompanied by Maria Claudia Lopez, Secretary of Culture District, the Princess attended the launch of a new area of the library called “Chambers Graphic District” dedicated to manga, anime, sagas and graphic novel.

At the library Princess Laurentien presented her book “Mr Finney and the world turned upside-down” and read some extract from it to the children gathered in the library. Princess Laurentien also paid a visit to Fundalectura, a non-profit prganization established in 1990 for the promotion of reading in Colombia.

Later the Princess returned to the Fair where she visited the pavillion of the Ministry of Culture along with the Minister Mariana Graces. The International Book Fair of Bogota (FilBo) started yesterday, will last until May 2nd.

In March 2009, Princess Laurentien was appointed as Special Envoy on Literacy for UNESCO.
