Death of Dowager Duchess Ameli of Oldenburg

Her Royal Highness Duchess Ameli of Oldenburg, née Princess zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg, passed away at Eutin on 26 March 2016, aged 93.

She was born on 4 March 1923 as the eldest child of Fürst Udo zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg and of his wife, née Countess Margarete zu Castell-Castell.
She married in 1951 Duke Anton Günther of Oldenburg, Head of the Grand Ducal Family from 1970 to 2014. The couple married in a double ceremony: at the same time Duke Anton-Günther’s brother Peter married Duchess Ameli’s sister Princess Gertrud.

The Duchess is survived by her daughter Duchess Helene and partner Dr. Claudia Reiche, her son Duke Christian, his wife Countess Caroline zu Rantzau and their four children: Dukes Alexander, Philipp and Anton and Duchess Katharina of Oldenburg and by her youngest sister Dr. Pauline Horst, née Princess of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg.

The duchess will be burried next to her husband in the family mausoleum at the Gertrudenkirchhof in Oldenburg. On the wish of the deceased and her family, the funeral will only be attended by a small group of close family and friends.
