King Willem-Alexander paid a surprise visit to the neighbourhoods of Transvaal and Schilderswijk in the Hague today. The king visited the market of the neighbourhoods and spoke to residents for two hours.

The working class and immigrant neighbourhoods have been in the news negatively for a long time. A terrorist cell was operating from this area. Last year there were several riots by youngsters who attacked the police. The visit was planned for a while but became extra important due to the terrorist attack in Brussels yesterday.

At the beginning of the visit the king gave a short statement, saying that it is very important to show that everybody who wants to can participate in Dutch society. The king also said that we have to keep our backs straight in these difficult circumstances. According to the government information service (RVD) the king wanted to see how people of different backgrounds are living together and what they do to improve the social cohesion of the area.
