Death Certificate for Lord Lucan Granted; Son Inherits Earldom

There is now a new Earl of Lucan, 42 years after the 7th Earl disappeared following the gruesome murder of the family nanny.

George Bingham became the 8th Earl after a High Court judge yesterday approved a death certificate for his father, John Bingham – more commonly known as Lord Lucan. The Earl has not been seen since November 1974, when he disappeared after allegedly beating nanny Sandra Rivett to death with a pipe and also beating his estranged wife, Lady Veronica.

He was legally declared dead in 1999, however a death certificate was required for his son to inherit the Earldom. This was not possible prior to the Presumption of Death Act, which came into effect in late 2014.
