Marriage Certificate of Napoleon and Joséphine Up For Auction
French auction house Osenat has announced that a lot in one of their upcoming auctions is the religious marriage certificate of Napoleon Bonaparte and his first wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais.
The certificate, demanded by Pope Pius VII in order for him to attend the coronation of Napoleon in December 1804 (until then the couple had only had a civil service, not a Catholic marriage ceremony), is part of the collection of American billionaire Christopher Forbes.
While the auction house has not given an expected price for the piece, Napoleon and Joséphine’s civil marriage certificate fetched 437,000€ at an auction in 2014.
