Princess Sofia today was present at the graduation ceremony of the Sophiahemmet, for the nurses of the organisation who have completed their training, at Stockholm’s City Hall.

The pregnant Princess, who is due in April, handed out the traditional brooches given to all the ‘Sophia Sisters’. The Sophiahemmet was founded in 1889 by Queen Sofia who saw how Florence Nightingale was implementing new methods of caring for patients during a visit to London in 1881, and decided to have a similar system in Sweden.

Sofia was made the honorary chairman of the Sophiahemmet at the beginning of the year, taking over from Princess Christina, who held the position since 1972.
