Dutch Official Visit to the United States of America, Day 2

On Tuesday June 2nd, the second day of their official visit, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima went to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

At their arrival at the Gerald Ford Airport, the Royal Couple was welcomed by Rick Snyder, the Governor of the State of Michigan, and his wife Sue. At the welcoming ceremony were also present the children of the Dutch-American Christian school. Afterwards they went to the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park where took place a reception and a lunch in honor of the King and Queen.

In his speech, the King thanked the Governor for the warm welcome and talked about the large presence of people with Dutch roots in Michigan. After lunch the King and the Queen planted a tree in the garden.

Later the Royal Couple visited the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, which specialises in pediatric oncology. They made a tour of the hospital and then went to the Van Andel Research Institute, a center that conducts research about neurodegenerative diseases. During the visit was signed a letter of understanding between the Institute and the Dutch-based ParkinsonNet, a network of health care providers specializd in the treatment and management of patients with Parkinson’s disease.

In the afternoon they left Grand Rapids and moved to Chicago. In Chicago the Royal Couple visited the Chicago Cultural Center. In the evening took place a business dinner with Dutch and American companies. The King gave a speech.
