The Countess of Wessex was in Benson, Oxfordshire today to open the new air ambulance base at the Thames Valley Air Ambulance Base at RAF Benson.

Sophie was greeted by the Base’s Station Commander Group Captain Simon Paterson, before being shown around the new facilities, which include training rooms for pilots and paramedics.

She was shown how to intubate a patient (on a dummy of course!) before inspecting one of the organisation’s helicopters. Sophie happily climbed into the cockpit of ‘Bob’ alongside pilot Dave Webber, who informed how of how the helicopter operates. During her visit, the Countess was able to speak with pilots, paramedics, volunteers and patients who have been treated by the Thames Valley Air Ambulance.
